*minimum 2 appearances, starting with 1998 season:

1. Texas (2)- 33.2 million
2. Oregon (2)- 30.7 million
3. USC (2)- 28.5 million
4. Florida (2)- 27.8 million
5. Auburn (2)- 26.7 million
6. Florida St (4)- 26.6 million
7. Ohio St (6)- 26.0 million
8. Clemson (4)- 25.6 million
9. Miami (2)- 25.3 million
10. Alabama (9)- 25.3 million
11. Oklahoma (4)- 24.8 million
12. Notre Dame (2)- 24.3 million
13. LSU (4)- 24.2 million
14. Georgia (3)- 22.7 million

I see a lot of teams who play in the title game often near the bottom of the list… many of whom think they are major brands.

Meanwhile, I can’t help but notice the top 5 teams played in just 2 title games apiece in the 27-year National Title Game era.

It’s almost as if when it comes to National Title Games, brands don’t actually matter and fans often just want to see someone new compete for once.

To point out the idiocy.
Close games have high ratings.
Blowouts have low ratings.

This just ends up being "who played national title games closer to 1998" than anything lol

Not always true. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Three of the Top 5 highest rated games had winning margins of 16, 22, and 27 points.

Meanwhile some close games had lower viewership… 2016 Alabama vs Clemson was decided by just 3 points and comes in 18th out of 27.

2003 LSU vs Oklahoma was decided by just 7 points and comes in 20th out of 27.

2024 Notre Dame vs Ohio State was a closer game (11 points) than last season’s Michigan vs Washington (21 points), and yet Michigan vs Washington had 5.7 million more viewers.

It’s almost as if novelty is the biggest driver.

Huh. Who would have thought.

Oh, right… most people.

Not calling OP one, but plenty of people care about this stuff. Such as the sidewalk fans that always tout it.

Myself, as an alumnus, does not give one iota of a damn.
