Malzahn should have left while he still could. He won't be such a hot name by December.

He will be a hotter name... last year folks wanted to give MOST of the credit to CAM... But look at CGM first year at Auburn with Todd at QB.... Auburn was TERRIBLE on offense in 2008, yet in one year he turned that around. Malzahn has done that at every stop. This year more people will be watching CGM.

Next year is going to be a struggle. I see anywhere from 5-9 wins depending on injuries and how well the new o-linemen step up. However, if we have another solid recruiting year this year, 2011 and 2012 look like strong years for AU. Lot's of young, talented guys getting experience and learning the game this season.

Barnhart, who is now working for CBSSportsline.com, gives his take on this:
LINK
quote:

Auburn, Ala. -- On the first day of spring practice coach Gene Chizik asked everybody who had started six or more college football games for Auburn to raise their hands.

"Guys started looking around because there weren't very many hands up," said Chizik. "That became the picture of the reality we're now facing."

When Auburn started spring practice on March 23, there were just 49 players on scholarship. Gone were 23 seniors and two unforgettable juniors, Newton and defensive tackle Nick Fairley, the Lombardi Trophy winner. Gone were eight starters from each side of the ball plus kicker Wes Bynum, whose field goal on the final play gave Auburn the 22-19 win over Oregon in the championship game in Glendale, Ariz.

2 loss season for sure and might be a repeat for NC.

...I wouldn't bet on the barn numbers being back to where they need to be in 12-13. Unless of course he is talking about intramural f'ball team numbers.

Kind of except AU still has a lot of talent left on the team to build off of.

So 74 scholarship players this fall? Wow. With only 8 leaving putting you at 66, should we assume that AU will only sign 19 this fall, or the customary 28?

If I remember correctly, Auburn started last summer with 82, and gave three scholarships to walkons to get to 85. 23 seniors and two juniors left.

If the OP is correct, and there are 46 (after Curry) now, that means that Chizik ran off 14 between August and the beginning of April????

How the hell does that happen?

So AU can sign 28 max this year putting their roster @ 75 scholarshiped players and leaving open slots for 10 kids? So basically if AU ran their program correctly 10 more kids who desperately need a college education could be receiving one. Way to frick over 10 kids Chiz! And gawd forbid Coach Saban send a hurt player off the team with a free ride courtesy of a medical scholly. As usual 99% of the people can't see the forest for the trees.

5 get arrested (4 at same time), 4 more have injuries &/or grade issues, not sure on Curry, and 3 leave program early. That's 13 underclassmen & your SR class (which, I believe, is more than the 23 that has been quoted, but I could be wrong).

Tell me where I'm wrong. You guys hoarding schollies is a crime. Maybe if your dumbass coach would quit his other job at Dominos Pizza he'd have time to correctly add his players up.

The 23 that left were 20 seniors and 3 underclassmen that left for the NFL.
------
5 got kicked off for being complete fricking idiots - 4 for the robbery and Eric Smith = 28 total
------

The rest that left are below -

Winter gave up football - already getting his masters in either finance or accounting and already has a good job setup for him.

Curry got the boot for breaking team rules - drinking and smoking weed and just being hardheaded about it.

Gayden had a hurt knee all year last year and never played. He decided to move back closer to home. I'm not sure if he's still playing or not.

Andre Harris I can only assume just realized that he'd never see the field for any meaningful time and left.

Philip Pierre Louis was coming off two torn acl's and gave up football and is running track.

Robert Cooper is probably in the same boat as Harris.

All those = 34 gone from last years team that really had 82 scholarship players, because I'm not gonna count the 3 walkons that got scholarships just before the year started. That was just a goodwill gift to those guys that have paid their dues being walkons.

When Auburn does finally get their scholorship numbers they will be an extremely heavy freshman and sophomore team. It's not just a mattter of having 85 on scholorship to be successful in the SEC. it's having 85 with a balance of fresh/soph/jr/sr to be competetive and 85 with heavy jr/sr numbers to have a shot at winning it all. AU is much further away that 2013 to be in the mix as a contender. They sold their soul last year now it's time to pay up. The excuses are starting to pill up from AU. After the next 2 seasons of struggles how many blue chip recruits are going to want to come and be part of the rebuilding. As far as Mahlzahn goes, everyone looks at what he accomplished with Todd as smoke and mirrors. Thats not going to fly the third year against SEC coaching staffs. He is no longer going to out formation/misdirect/trick play his way into great O numbers and unlike last year he can no longer call the Cam left Cam right oh hell Cam just do something play.
