It would be like a football coach winning multiple conference championships and playoff appearances at Vandy.

My first thought was that's silly but frankly it isn't. The most impressive thing about it to me is that it isn't even an up and down thing. Auburn's floor is now 5-8 seed in rebuilding/roster doesn't work out right years.

Guy is incredible.

Honestly wonder who else in the sport has done something like that in a somewhat similar situation? The most similar would have to be Calhoun at UConn?

People like to act like Duke was nothing before K but that's not true. They weren't good when he was hired but they had a history. Donovan obviously somewhat fits but Florida had become competent in basketball in the late 1980s and 1990s.

I’m glad you asked

quote:

I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.

I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully.

I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men.

I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities.

I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all.

I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all.

I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by "doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with my God."

And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it.

It should be noted that Auburn invested a lot into rebuilding the basketball program before Pearl got the call, including a nice new arena, new facilities, new recruiting contacts and personnel. And Auburn fans had shown they would support a good program as they had done when we occasionally popped some good teams in the 70s, 80s and late 90s.

He inherited a team with no talent, but a good foundation to build one with some coaching and recruiting moves. I wouldn't call us a "sleeping giant" or anything but we weren't Vandy football either.
