Gafford Preseason All-SEC; Hogs Picked 10th
• Daniel Gafford was named to the SEC Men’s Basketball Preseason All-Conference first team, as selected by a panel of both league and national media members.

• The Razorbacks, one of a league-record eight teams to play in the NCAA Tournament last season, were picked 10th in the preseason poll.

• The good news for Razorback fans is that Arkansas has exceeded the preseason polls in each of the last five years.

YEAR PRESEASON FINISH Record • SEC
2013-14 8th 5th 22-12 •10-8
2014-15 3rd 2nd 27-9 • 13-8
2015-16 11th t-8th 16-16 • 9-9
2016-17 5th t-3rd 26-10 • 12-6

Home Openers
• After facing Texas, Arkansas will return home to host UC Davis in the first of four games of the Hardwood Showcase.

• The Razorbacks have won 43 straight home openers,
including a 25-0 record in openers inside Bud Walton Arena.
• Mike Anderson is 16-0 as a head coach when playing his home opener, outscoring his opponents by 22.8 points in such games.

Arkansas Helps SEC Boast

• Heading into this season, the SEC boasts that (1)a record eight teams played in the NCAA Tournament last season, (2) the league held a 6-4 edge in the Big 12/SEC Challenge and
(3)four teams have recruiting classes that ranked among the nation’s top 25. Arkansas played
its part in all accounts.

(1) Arkansas reached the NCAA for the second straight year — the third time in the last four years — and played in the postseason for the fourth time in the last five years.

(2) Arkansas defeated Oklahoma State, 66-65, in the
2018 Big 12/SEC Challenge.

(3) Arkansas’ incoming freshman class was ranked 25th in the nation by ESPN.com.

Lest We Forget
• Arkansas drained 39.6 percent of its 3-pointers to lead the SEC and rank 19th nationally last season.

• The Razorbacks also ranked second in the SEC in:
- assist-to-turnover ratio (1.31)
- overall field goal percentage (47.4)
- scoring offense (80.5 ppg)
- fewest turnovers per game (10.9).

Mike Anderson previews season opener vs. Texas

Andrew Jones' emotional return and first point since being diagnosed with leukemia

quote:

Texas guard Andrew Jones appeared in only 10 games during his sophomore season last year after a January leukemia diagnosis forced him to step away from the game for treatment. Jones has been open about his road to recovery throughout the process, posting progress videos earlier this summer of him dunking and getting back into competition only six months removed from his diagnosis. During that time, he's developed quite a fan base in the college basketball community rooting for him to make a full recovery. Sticking with his transparent approach to his recovery, Jones, in a video published on The Players' Tribune this week, went in detail about his fight with cancer, his support system that has fueled him, and the symptoms he contracted before the diagnosis.

quote:

"At first they thought I had a viral infection," said Jones. "Then they thought I had the flu. I'm gonna get some Theraflu, and I'll be good in a week. But it didn't get better. I went and got blood work done, and she told me it was leukemia." Jones had opened up his sophomore season on a tear out of the gate, which, Jones says, was part of why the diagnosis was so frustrating to come to grips with. In those 10 games he appeared in, he averaged 13.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, and was rounding into shape as one of the top players in the Big 12. "It's kind of depressing because I was almost at the peak of my game," said Jones. "I was playing at a high level to make myself a potential draft pick ... I started to feel run down, started to feel heavy. It kind of feels like a dehydrating type of feeling, and it's like you don't wanna move, you just wanna lay there."

quote:

Jones is in the midst of returning to the game he loves and learning to live life as a cancer survivor. Since being released from the hospital in late February 2018, he's slowly gaining weight -- up 10 pounds to 160 -- and he's doing as much as possible to get back on the court again. "I'm starting to embrace being a cancer survivor," says Jones. "If I can inspire you just to get up in the morning and attempt to make your life better, then I've done my job, I feel good. I've faced death twice, and I'm here by the grace of God."

• SHARE THE ROCK: Texas' guard trio of Matt Coleman III, Elijah Mitrou-Long and Courtney Ramey combined to register 19 assists against just 6 turnovers in Tuesday's season-opening victory.

• DEFENSE WINS: The Longhorns limited Eastern Illinois to 59 points on 35.7-percent (20-56) FG shooting, including a 26.1-percent (6-23) mark from three-point range in Tuesday's win. Texas held the Panthers to 5 assists against 19 turnovers.

Eastern Illinois is supposed to be terrible. #302 in KenPom, and something like the 7th best team with "Illinois" in its name. The spread is Texas -23.5.

Projected Starters for Texas:
Coleman G 6'2" 180 lbs

Ramey G 6'3" 185 lbs

Long G 6'1" 185 lbs

DO F 6'9" 250 pounds

Sims F 6'9" 240 lbs

-Six players record at least 7 points

-Played 10 guys

Since the Whorns are avoiding our A&M brethren hopefully the Aggies can enjoy some Austin Schadenfreude after we pummel them.
