"our two best players were so good everyone else just stood around and watched" as the blame for the season not going how they wanted is a bit much.
Reminds me of Georgia fans thinking 2009 would be a better year than a disappointing 2008 because Stafford and Moreno caused it to be less than a full team effort.

McElroy: That team lacked leadership last year. Everyone says "Well, what about Bryce and Will." Well, okay. Fine. Bryce and Will can do only so much. When you have two guys that are trying to play hero ball, everyone else takes a step back. Now collectively, I think they have the recipe. I think they win the national championship this year. An unheralded team coming into this year, relatively speaking, with a lot of dudes that can play high level ball."
Saban said similar things at SECMD.

Saban said we had a tendency to run things that were just basically "let Bryce figure it out". That wasn't our players standing around doing that, it was our OC and his antiquated 2005 era NFL offense based around a QB just making plays and not on stacking plays and using Bryces talents within an offensive system. And I'm pretty sure he added at the end that it was a "failure of coaching". Which is blatantly was - the OC and himself for allowing it to go on.
Getting rid of Bryce isn't a positive. Getting rid of a offensive system that doesn't build on itself nor have any real identity other than "star QB drops back and looks around" is a positive.
As for defense, I have no clue what McElroy is talking about. Nobody stands around to watch an OLB. That doesn't even make sense.

Here's direct quote from him: "I can't totally put my finger on it," Saban said. "I think there were a lot of really high expectations … probably because of Bryce Young, the great player that he was. I think sometimes when you have a team that has a couple of great players and maybe the other people don't take the responsibility and accountability to do their part as well because they're thinking, 'These guys are going to carry us.'

When you're so much better you're just playing around during the game.

When you know you're gonna lose so you just stop playing before the ball is dead.

Cheers Will. Only Kool-aid now. Don't break into daddy's liquor cabinet.

Have never heard this from a Bammer, at least not here.
They usually blame coaching.

Finebaum has taken him to task over it, saying "It's never Saban's fault. Now it's Bryce Young and Will Anderson's fault for being so good." Paraphrased because I can't recall the exact quote, but that's pretty close.

It was a culmination of multiple things. Football really is a game of inches.
2017 Bama was far from impressive. They had a relatively weak schedule compared to past national champions. They survived a couple close games and lost the biggest game of the year against Auburn. Snuck into the playoff and won it all. The 2022 team didn’t look that different from 2017 other than the obvious end result.
Championships takes a lot of luck as well as skill. Look at almost any national champ the last 30 years. Almost every single one had some luck. Including the reigning champs. The ball didn’t bounce Bama’s way like it had. Saban isn’t done.

The last two Bama teams did not respond to adversity like the ones in the past. The only one since the 2010 team that struggled (this is relative of course) through the regular season the way the last two did was 2014 with maybe Bama's worst QB during the Saban dynasty.

It's a Bama show. Even though he has callers from all over, Alabama with Auburn make up over half of the callers. And the ones who have a different number to avoid the wait are all Auburn and Alabama fans except for that LSU guy.

The 2021 team handled adversity decently well. The OL was atrocious yet pulled some wins out of their arse. How much of that was just BY and WA establishing their hero ball bonafides though? Hard to say.

The 2017 team was led by Jalen Hurts. We ran the hell out of the ball. That team also had a multitude of injuries throughout the season but held it together. The 2017 team was much more physical than 2022. Not even in the same universe.
When the 2017 team won the NC, BAMA had the number 1 defense in the country, in spite of losing key players for all or some of the season. That was also the last season for Jeremy Pruitt.
2022 under Pete Golding being compared to Jeremy Pruitt's outfit is ridiculous.
Jalen Hurt's physical downhill offense compared to the pass-first principles of a Bryce Young is also ridiculous.

This was mostly due to Jalen Hurts' limitations at the time. His development still left much to be desired and it limited the offense.
The 2017 Bama offense was the most talented total unit in CFB history in my opinion, and the defense was pretty good too.
There were 11 first round picks, and 23 future NFL starters, on that offense.

Disagree. They were only really challenged twice in the regular season. One of those was a loss to Auburn and one was a win over MSU. MSU was good that year. Finished ranked I think.
