Interesting trivia question during that game. Expecting UF to win its third NC in four years, the question was which teams had previously won three consensus national championship titles over a four year period.
The answer given was Minnesota in 34, 35 and 36; and Notre Dame in 46, 47 and 49. No problem with Notre Dame - won AP titles (and a host of others) for those three years.
Minnesota - one loss, but won the first AP title in 36 (LSU, unbeaten at the time of the final AP poll was #2). 1934 - no AP poll then, and the 34 NC is one of the titles BAMA lays claim to. 1935 - also no AP poll that season, and 8-0 Minnesota did get "selected" #1 in several polls and formulas, but LSU had a possible legitimate claim to #1 that season, finishing the regular season 9-1 (lost to TCU in the Sugar Bowl, 3-2).
Hardly think Minnesota was "concensus" NC all three of those years.

I figured ND was one of them. Also thought Bama might have been an answer as well. Totally blown away by Minnesota though...

And 1978 was a shared title with Southern Cal...the Condoms beat #1 Bama early in the season but then lost their bowl game. Bama won theirs and moved back to the top spot. One of the polls, can't remember whether it was AP or UPI, still voted SC #1 based on the head to head.

I was thinking Nebraska, but I forgot they shared the '97 one with Michigan.

In 78 BAMA was #1 on most of the major polls including AP, but UPI gave #1 to USC.

Southern Cal beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl, 17-10.

Alabama came close in the 60's. Coach Bryant won his first in 196l. Three years later, he won in 64, then again in 65. All three of these were AP, too.
Bama fans thought the 1966 championship should have been their's too. That was the year that ND and Mich. St. played to a tie and split the title, even though Bama was undefeated.
