The 1980s was the best decade of SEC football. It started with Bear Bryant retiring and ended with Spurrier starting at Florida. In between Pate Dye and Vince Dooley had great teams. Tennessee and LSU both won two titles. There were great players like Herschel, Bo, Reggie White, Emmitt Smith, and Derrik Thomas. Florida was number 1 for a time in 1985. This was the decade of best collection of coaches, players, and parity.

I'm pretty sure Kerwin Bell was Florida's QB for the entire decade.

Also, games were on TBS following re-runs of Andy Griffith.

Long before Oregon made it en vogue, Vandy would change uniform styles and colors every year in the hopes of "shedding" the previous season's terrible results. (spoiler alert: it didn't work).

There were non-conference rivalries: Bama-Penn St, Auburn-FSU, UGA-Clemson, LSU-Texas AM, etc.

I disagree 100%. You could make an argument for the 90's but not the 80's and I don't think the 90's was the best. We did start the SEC championship game in the 90's and that separated the SEC from all other conferences so bad....they had to start their own by expanding. That was a major development for the SEC. No question about it.

im with you on the 90's...but I also am a big spurrier fan...even before he came to Carolina. That was the decade of change from the beginning of the SEC title game to the revolution of the passing offense

The SEC won six years in the 2010s. How could that be worse than the 1980s?

My biggest problem with the 90s being the best is when ppl think of the 90s they don’t think Florida or sec(mighta been different if fat Phil coulda beat spurrier more), they think big 3 plus Nebraska. When ppl talk bcs era, sec dominance is synonymous.

The 90s were ruled by

FSU
Nebraska
Florida

Vols were up there too but a distant 4th IMO.

The Lou Holtz / Ken Hatfield years. We won a lot of SWC games in that decade.
