Who is really offended. Offensive enough to ban the mascot from anything sports related? It’s a confederate soldier. UNLV is the Rebels. It’s a unique mascot. I know it’s never coming back but I think it’s an overreaction and replacing it with a shark is even worse.

To me? No.

To black athletes that don’t feel comfortable coming to a place with a mascot that looks like a plantation owner? Almost certainly.

Tubberville and Cutcliffe both said the rebel flag and Colonel Reb were hurting us in recruiting. Especially considering our past. Which is why they were rightly removed.

Also, Tony the shark has been “retired” since 2021. He’s no longer around

I'm sure I'll get downvoted for this but the Rebels name should probably go too. I'm proud of my great great grandfather fighting in the Civil War but the nickname does not represent everyone who goes to school in Oxford.

Getting rid of the name Ole Miss or the Rebels mascot will do FAR more harm than good. That’s taking away a huge part of the identity of the school. Boosters would stop donating money across the board.

Rebels isn't a mascot.

Ole Miss is a nickname for the University of Mississippi.

Rebels is a nickname for the athletic teams.

The mascot for the Ole Miss Rebels, is the Solo Cup.

Juice is the Mascot.

But seriously to answer OP it’s not just the fact that it’s offensive to some people that’s the problem. Mississippi has already got that it’s full of nothing but poor racist perception by a lot of people in the US. Having a confederate symbol as the mascot of the flagship university of the state doesn’t exactly help said image either.

People seem to forget but schools are academics first and all universities that aren’t Ivy League level are marketing themselves to try and get students to come from all over the world. If even 50 students a year decide not to come to the university because of something like the mascot think how much money that’s going to cost the university over time. Also on top of that as someone already mentioned it can hurt recruiting as well.

Disagree wholeheartedly. This country was founded by rebels and it could be argued any and all improvements have been made by rebels. The problem is allowing people to equate rebels with slave owners when clearly MLK, James Meredith (super nice guy btw), and countless others would definitely be considered rebels. Being a rebel is in your soul. It’s an attitude and a spirit of nonconformity that should be celebrated in my opinion.

The name does not come from the revolutionary war but rather the civil war. I don't see how you can honestly argue the point. It was changed from The Flood to The Rebels in 1936.

quote:

Rebels

The name REBELS as Ole Miss' official athletics nickname emerged in 1936. Suggested by Judge Ben Guider of Vicksburg, it was one of five entries submitted to Southern sports writers for final selection from a list totaling more than 200 proposed nicknames. The promotion was a contest sponsored by The Mississippian, student newspaper. Of the 42 newsmen contacted, 21 responded. "Rebels" was the choice of 18. The University Athletic Committee made the name official with the Committee chairman, the late Judge William Hemingway, stating: "If 18 sports writers wish to use 'Rebels', I shall not rebel, so let it go 'Ole Miss Rebels.'"

I actually like the Mississippi Black Bears if we had to get rid of everything. Though it would take 100 years to sound normal.

OT but no joke Washington Football Team was a legit great name, they should have stuck with it over the commanders.

Back to bickering about stuff that Ole Miss fans have been bickering at each other about for 20 years now

The only respectable way to move from Rebels would be revert to the Flood.

We had the flags taken away. We had " From Dixie with Love" taken away. We had Colonel Reb removed. All the Confederate monuments were removed. Let's just go ahead and remove everything that is associated with the white south. If a black athlete or student doesn't want to come to Ole Miss because of a few historic emblems that our ancestors fought and died for, then let them go to school up north. I'm 72 years old and I stopped giving to the school years ago when they took all our history away. We ARE the Ole Miss Rebels, by Damn!!
