I've got Yankee family coming to town and am going to Waffle House one morning.
I'd like to know what your recommendations are for a first-time gritser. TYIA.

They throw a slice of cheese on it. I usually mix it all together with my scrambled eggs and sausage/bacon. Take a spoonful of that heavenly concoction and put it on toast. Enjoy.

Ask Gus, he & the wife ate there last weekend; oh, wait, it was Sammich time, again...

You take them and immediately throw them in the trash because they're goddamn disgusting.
Hash browns or latkes ftw.

There's a huge difference in real grits and that stupid instant shite they serve at greasy spoon restaurants. Think of introducing someone to coffee by serving them instant coffee.
The butter should be cooked into the Grits, not slathered on top. And not table wax margarine from a pouch. Real butter.
Cheese is always good. But everyone knows that.
If you introduce someone to something new, take the time to do it right.

Don't do Waffle House grits. Hashbrowns, scattered, smothered, covered, FTFW.

Why don't you just make some grits?

You get the hashbrowns at the WaHo, duh.

The best is sweet unsalted, and yes REAL butter is key

YES!
And not that fake cheese either. No Velveeta or powered orange crap they add to Macaroni & Cheese and have the audacity to still call it cheese.
On top of that I would add
Shrimp, and not those small, too salty, salad shrimps but real shrimps like grown men should eat.

No grits. Double hash browns.

Salt pepper butter and an over easy egg on top, chop that shite up and eat.

Grits are gross. WH hash browns I do smothered, covered, peppered and capped every time. No other way.

You should know
Like most of y'all, I like butter salt and pepper. I have a Filipino friend who puts sugar in it- I don't know if that's just individual taste or something cultural???

I know some old cats that put real sorghum in their grits but never saw anybody under 60 do it. How old is your friend?
Used to be a big deal when the steam sorghum crusher came to town when I was young
It looked sorta like this and had a big leather belt about a foot wide they hooked up to the machine that actually did the crushing from the actual steam engine. It was big and loud and made quite a noise at the farming event when it showed up.

She's 42.
I bet that was cool to watch that machine in action.
