*yes I know this story is from 2015, but that's how long the media has been hiding this from us!

There's no way this was an accident. Chickens are basically already mini-dinosaurs anyway.

quote:

The team's aim was to understand how the bird beak evolved, because the beak is such a vital part of bird anatomy. It has been crucial for their success. The 10,000 or more bird species occupy a wide range of habitats, and many have specialised beaks to help them survive.

But they did not set out to create a "dino-chicken", say lead authors Bhart-Anjan Bhullar of Yale University in New Haven and Arkhat Abzhanov of Harvard University in Cambridge, US.

Yeah, sure you didn't Bart

quote:

They found that birds have a unique cluster of genes related to facial development, which the non-beaked creatures lacked.

When they silenced these genes, the beak structure reverted back to its ancestral state. So too did the palatal bone in the roof of the mouth.

(normal chicken embryo, altered chicken embryo, alligator embryo)

quote:

To make this genetic tweak, Bhullar and his colleagues isolated the proteins that would have gone on to develop beaks. Then they suppressed them using tiny beads coated with an inhibiting substance.

When their skeletons started to develop inside the eggs, these animals had short, rounded bones instead of elongated, fused beaks that bird skeletons have.

quote:

For now Bhullar has no plans, or ethical approval, to hatch the snouted chickens. But he believes they would have been able to survive "just fine".

So who thought making flying alligators is a good idea?

Thanks for the nightmares Bowl.

A flying dinosaur alligator chicken with super strength DNA?

Would take over the world.

There is a concerted effort by prominent palebiologist Dr. Jack Horner and his associates to reverse engineer a dinosaur from a chicken. The link is a TED talk by Horner detailing his progress.

It’s fascinating to think what can be done by manipulating genes. All of the chicken’s ancestral dinosaur genes are still in place. Some of them have just been turned off by evolution.

Indeed. And as the article said, the changes wouldn't be as drastic as some of the "fancy" breeds of chicken today. Besides... who wouldn't want to have a pet chickenasaurus?

Aren't flying chicken dinosaurs the same as dragons?

They're about to release genetically modified mosquitoes in Africa to help fight malaria.

LINK

quote:

Some 10,000 sterile male mosquitoes will be released in Burkina Faso, a country at the front line of the war against the disease. Last year there were 9.8m cases of malaria here, resulting in almost 4,000 deaths.

quote:

The eventual hope is that male mosquitoes, modified so that 90 per cent of their offspring are also male, will be released in the region. This would dramatically reduce the overall population as well as reducing malaria incidence, as it is the female mosquitoes which transmit the disease.

It's often said that malaria is responsible for killing half of all humans who have ever lived. While that figure is only a guess, it's clear that malaria has been around throughout human evolution and has had a dramatic effect on our numbers.

It may even be responsible for "selecting out" the races that made it the farthest along the human branch of evolution. Neandertals, Denisovans and modern humans were three races that survived and spread beyond Africa. We are the only race still walking the earth.

Have you ever looked a buzzard up close and right in the face?....there's a helluva resemblance....don't even ask me how/why I've done that, but I have.
