Sweet. I like Whitlow. I mean I really like the group of QBs we have all together, but I'd love to see him really do something this year in the spread. Especially after he was fed to the wolves last season in that shite show.

And apparently it's raining again.

Yeah, Timmons will be very good. Could be a Randall Cobb type player.

I think Whitlow will end up with the starting spot.

My biggest concern is our secondary. We really need Nate Willis to be eligible.

I think so too. Smith should've went ahead and had the surgery on his shoulder IMO.

And second the concern in the secondary. I think Willis is going to be okay though. Just given the way Stoops has talked about him.

Yeah, it's such a pain waiting for his scores to come back. He's only gotten one back so far. Damned JUCO professors.

Or just professors in general.

He thinks that Rumph and Cobble are both jogging on the sidelines? It's hard to miss those big guys.

On the upside our QBs are throwing well in the rain.

Pouring cats and dogs kind of rain.

From tonight's practice:

Per Matt May at 247, Injury Updates: Za'Darius Smith tweaked an ankle, day-to-day; Donte Rumph still coming off shoulder issue; Braylon Heard cut under eye*

Heard played tonight.

From Kyle Tucker's write up on the practice (from the C-J):

quote:

Just one reporter’s eyeball test here: Jalen Whitlow looked best of the quarterbacks, although he had his share of duds, too. He completed what would’ve been around an 80-yard touchdown pass down the middle to freshman Jeff Badet against the second-string defense, and dropped another long pass down the sideline over JUCO transfer Javess Blue shoulder, also against the No. 2 defense.

Just a note, each QB gets a day rotations with the 1s and this was Smith's day. So it shouldn't be taken as an indication of who is #1 in the QB battle.

quote:

There was a lot of mixing and matching on the offensive line, so I can’t say for sure who the starters are.

FWIW, Stoops has commented about this a couple times in that they would mix it up to help patch up the lack of depth on the line.

Some quotes via Stoops

quote:

ON THE PRACTICE: “Just an average (practice). A little bit sloppy today. I don’t know. Getting in the stadium. It was our first time practicing in the stadium, just the whole organization. Everything. We weren’t as crisp as we have been. A little bit of weather. A little bit off schedule because they told me there was some lightning was coming in. We skipped a punt period and got off track a little bit. Overall, just a very average day.”

quote:

ON ZA’DARIUS SMITH (IN A WALKING BOOT) ANKLE: “Za’Darius has got a little ankle. Yeah, he rolled it yesterday a little bit. It was a little sore today, day to day. I don’t think it will be anything major.”

ON COBBLE AND RUMPH’S ABSENCE: “Rumph is still coming off that shoulder. Cobble’s a little banged up, too. We need those guys to be healthy. They’ll be out there. They’ve been practicing. They’re good. There’s nothing major there. We need those guys to be healthy. They’ll be out there. They’ve been practicing. They’re good. There’s nothing major there.

ON DYSHAWN MOBLEY (HERNIA) PRACTICING: “Yeah, he’s just starting to get back into it right now, yeah.”

quote:

ON IF IT’S THE FIRST TIME HE’S FELT IT WAS SLOPPY: “It was. It was the first practice I could walk off and be disappointed because – I just don’t think the energy was great. I don’t think our concentration was great. I don’t think we executed as well as we have. We dropped balls. Just overall sloppy.”

So UK wraps up it's first week of fall camp/practice today. Tomorrow will be meetings and walk-thrus so there'll not be anything to report on (apparently this will be a pattern because media availability is restricted on Thursdays and Sundays).

UKAthletics.com blog with Coach Stoops and Coach Eliot interviews

Jeff Drummond (Scout.com) article regarding today's practice

Some notes:

- Stoops seemed to be much happier with the effort today compared to yesterday. Said the offense looked much better. In relation to yesterday, “It wasn’t great football,” Stoops said. “Today, I saw some good football.”

- It was noted that Marcus McWilson is being moved around a bit. He played some nickle a little closer to the line of scrimmage today.

- Said he felt the QBs were inconsistent yesterday but that had a lot to do with the people around them. Still no word on where the QB battle stands.

- Pointed out Hatcher, Timmons, Montgomery, and Badet again today. Said he thought Blue would be very much in the mix once he gets in better shape.

- Noted that Glenn Faulkner had a nice interception today and said he has been playing much better this summer than the spring.

- The question was asked where coordinators will be coaching from during the season. Both will be on the sidelines and not in the box.

- Question was also asked whether Stoops was getting nervous about Nate Willis getting qualified and he said, “No, we’re working through it,” he said. “Everything should be good. I’ll know more, hopefully, next week.”

- "3 or 4 guys" are in line for punt returns this season. Sounds like it'll be by committee for the most part.

- Some defensive guys (i.e. Rumph, Cobble, Z. Smith) was a little limited today but they all practiced.

Also found something really interesting as DJ Eliot was talking. Talked about how poor the fundamentals were of our secondary when he came in and they're markedly better at this point.

Pretty damn frustrating to hear that they couldn't even teach our guys basic fundamentals in the secondary last season.

Monday Recap

UKAthletics.com Monday Football Blog with interviews from Coach Stoops and Coach Brown

Jeff Drummond (Scout.com) Monday Recap (Lengthy, solid read)

Notables:

Stoops quote on today's practice

quote:

"We have been getting lucky here with this weather," Stoops said. "This has been fantastic today. A lot of work in today again with a good physical practice. A lot of reps and a lot of good work. We were good on either side of the ball at different times. Overall, a good work day. Pleased with the effort and the execution at times. Obviously, we are a little inconsistent right now, but good day of work."

- Officials were on hand for today's practice with emphasis on pre-snap penalties with the instillation of the new offense.

- Coach Brown on the QB race:

quote:

"We’re not in an extreme hurry by any means. But I think we’ve got to start narrowing it down and getting the reps focused more.”

- Stoops on Maxwell Smith's shoulder:

quote:

According to Stoops, Smith’s right shoulder has not been an issue in recent practices. The sophomore from California missed some reps earlier in camp as a precautionary measure due to soreness.

- Injuries: Za'Darius Smith sat out again with the ankle injury but Stoops reiterated that it was minor. Heard sat due to the eye cut. Cobble returned to full reps today though.

- No official word on Nate Willis, but as his twitter indicates he should be in Lexington soon.

- Saturday's scrimmage will be the "big day" where they start determining roster positions, including at QB.

Anyone can feel free to comment at anytime BTW. Yes, I'm having a Bueller moment.

UKAthletics.com Tuesday Practice Recap with Stoops and Eliot video

Jeff Drummond (Scout.com) Tuesday Recap

Notes:

- Stoops was pretty happy with practice again today. Said they've been responding well.

- Jalen Whitlow popped off a 50 yard TD run in 11 on 11 live action. Not sure if that means Whitlow has improved or the defense needs to work on containing the QB. I'm going to go with the positive.

- Stoops thought the live period was really productive. Said the improved conditioning kept the offensive tempo pretty high.

- Stoops couldn't confirm anything on Nate Willis or on JUCO DT Melvin Lewis. Stoops did say he's expecting them both on campus soon.

- PK Mansour hit a 53 yarder today that Bradley Dale Peveto was pretty impressed with given the situation.

- Still no Za'Darius today but coaches say they're not concerned.

- There was a comment made about Whitlow and that he could see action on the field even if he's not named starting QB.

- Someone tried to get some info out of Eliot on the QBs by asking which one gives him the most trouble. He deferred. Seems it'll probably be right before the 1st game before we'll know for sure who ended up with the job.
