Nothing is more SEC than to complain about rules that benefited Alabama, get them changed, and then watch Alabama win with THOSE rules.
Man, Arkansas was basically in the SEC even way back then.

Which one is Jimmy and which one is Jerry? Were they friends back then?

Sounds like your beef is with the AP and UPI polls, not Alabama.
It's okay, I understand you're confused. It'll be alright.

Imagine if Alabama claimed 1964 based on those polls while Arkansas had won the Coaches' and AP polls. The outcry would be tremendous.

Trophies are in The Bryant Museum.

Could you not have a single digit jersey back then?

Thank you! That team was awesome and national champs!

The reason Bama keeps winning despite rule changes is because you never follow them in the first place. It doesn't matter what's on the books.

I can't argue with you since, according to what some posters in this thread apparently believe, Alabama voted themselves national champs in both the AP and UPI polls in '64. That can't be legal.

I have no beef with the UPI/AP polls...what Alabama fails to recognize is the fact that during this period (I know, I lived and covered sports during this time), the two service wire polls were not the only major polls and were not the only polls recognized by the NCAA.
Regardless of how the news wire polls were determined, the other polls were also highly recognized and whichever team won the CONSENSUS of all the polls was generally looked upon as the one who more rightly could claim the title. The NCAA allows any school that has been voted #1 in any final poll to claim the national title.
Hence, Alabama has the right to claim 1964. My beef is that Alabama people don't like to "share" the title and try to claim them as their own. Most national titles are SHARED. Also, Alabama claims some national titles that most schools wouldn't touch w/a 100-ft pole if they were in the same position (exception is Tennessee for 1967 -0- sheesh!).
Example: 1941 (finished 9-2), 1973 (lost to Notre Dame in bowl game, ND consensus champ), 1978 (lost to USC)
The service wire polls gained stature as the years went by to the point that, today, the AP and UPI (coaches) are largely the only ones that people look to (along with the FWAA). Today, they're only used to help the CFP committee decide who they want to invite. In essence, they've run their course and no longer serve their purpose as they once did.
