quote:I agree with this
When a QB who is a overall 60% passer completes 12 out of 12 passes in the 2nd half, and finished with an 87% passing % which is the worst we have given up in 11 years...
quote:This I don't necessarily agree with. The defense played well considering the position the coaches put them in. 3 down lineman are going to struggle applying pressure to a QB with 5 blockers. You can't ask a defense backfield to cover receivers indefinitely. Even an average QB will pick you apart if you give him enough time, and that's exactly what happened. We dared them to throw, and they did. They had no running game against us, with their leading rusher only having 45yds on 19 carries. What I do not understand is, we keep the same defensive gameplan even when it was painfully clear that it wasn't dooming us to failure. Why we didn't dial up more blitzes in man coverage during the second half is a head scratcher.
....then on D we didn't play well. If we get at times a pass rush that forces their QB to rush his passes or moves out of the pocket, then we either hold them to FGs and we have a better chance to win...

Even the announcers said this at halftime. Mason went full Ted Roof Saturday, minus the halftime adjustments.

Roof was a weird hire for Chizik because they really don't align philosophically. Roof is a great coach so no complaints but just a weird hire for a Tampa 2 guy like Chizik. Anyway, apparently what Roof would do is develop and implement his game plans at practice, then on Wednesday Chizik would often come in and totally throw out Roof's game plan for the week. So when Roof was making his awesome halftime adjustments, what he was actually doing was going back to what AU repped on Mon/Tue/Wed.

quote:I know Harsin is an offense guy, but damn, he had to see what we were doing on defense wasn't working. PSU's passing game is mediocre, at best. Yet again, we made them look like Tom Brady was their QB. At some point, you'd think the guy in charge of the whole show, would've stepped in and called for major adjustments to what we were doing on offense. Anybody that has ever strapped on pads and played in the secondary, will tell you zone is much harder to grasp and get right, than man. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was my belief that our secondary was projected to be strength of our defense. It sure didn't look like it Saturday. I mean, we had several plays with receivers uncovered, or poorly covered. I don't know if that was the ultimate issue, but zone coverage was clearly not working, but we stayed in it till the bitter end.

quote:I think, as has been said in other threads, we are going to have to endure some growing pains in the transition from primarily man to primarily zone. The benefits of zone will come, but it's gonna take these guys a little while to understand the more complex concepts that will allow them to play faster without having to think. Similar to going from Gus's simplistic offensive philosophy that a HS recruit can grasp from the get-go to a more complex system being installed right now. Just takes time to adjust.

Now, if we're a full season into this and our defense looks like it did on Saturday, then the criticism will certainly be warranted.
Just my two cents.

Hypothetical question, would we have won if Steele was calling the defense? In other words, would he have doggedly stuck to his defensive gameplan for the entire game?

Ok, it’ll take some time. But for goodness sake, practice it in practice and run in games what will actually win the game! Keep the zone experiment for teams like Alabama State.

I don’t know man. If we switched systems week to week we would be a team with no identity nor foundation. Versatility is key within base.

Hell, a lot of teams mix up zone and man during a game. The whole NFL is based on the QB recognizing and reading that defense before the snap.

They need to dial up some blitzes or rush more than 3-4 every once and a while. Make it a little harder than giving the qb 10 seconds to make a throw.

Well this is a rebuilding year and it’s important to establish your processes while trying to win every game. You have to build upon a base and foundation. It’s how it has always been. This isn’t video game football where you get immediate satisfaction by learning cheats to win.
It is through hard work and repetition. Harsin isn’t concerned about making you happy. He’s busy building a program for long term success. It may be bumpy and frustrating, but it’s being done so we can celebrate a lot of wins every year.

Nix should be held to 30 pass attempts a game. Period. He won’t be legendary and that’s fine.
He’s a decent QB, but our strength are Bigsby/Hunter/Shivers.
