Auburn was #3 going into the Sugar Bowl. Number 1 and 2 lost their bowl games. Auburn played a 11 game season then and with the bowl game ended up playing 9 ranked teams that year and going 11-1. Miami jumped from #5 to number 1 having only played 3 ranked teams that year. Both Miami and Auburn played a highly ranked Florida team that year and Florida curb stomped Miami and Auburn beat Florida. That one I’ll never understand.

1983 was when I realized the choosing of a champion had way more to do with selling newspapers and magazines than finding the most deserving or best team. The media hyped the Nebraska vs Miami thing as the National Title Game assuming Nebraska was going to win. The results were pre-determined as they in many cases still are to this day.
