They finished 7th nationally in '20 and consistently averages around 10th under Mahlzan. Not Bama like but certainly not bad at all and good enough to compete nationally.

Everyone has these problems at times but Malzahn missed a bunch on the OL/DL the last few years from what I've gathered from level-headed Auburn fans I know.

Speaking from my partisanship, Alabama consistently signs a top 5 class and often the top class but they really took it on the chin on the DL after losing Bo Davis. The last few years of relative mediocrity on the defense for Alabama are perhaps the realization of several classes where they missed guys or lost them to transfer due to them being flops.

It can happen to anyone, even the best, to varying degrees but Auburn PTBs didn't think their dry spell and bad luck was going to resolve itself. Cynically, you may argue that the Auburn PTBs put their thumbs on the scale to assure that Malzahn's recruiting would tank because they hated that deal their former university president signed Malzahn to in 2017. Who knows about that one...

Oh and I think the NCAA rules for COVID w/r/t recruiting really hurt Auburn. Auburn's whole marketing spiel is essentially "we're different than those other guys" and really lean into the old school small college town charm. That just doesn't transmit over zoom. There is a logical reason why the dominant schools even cleaned up more than usual last year and it is everything became about the business decision and not "touchy-feely" stuff since that was essentially legislated out of the process.
