Reading and hearing this you really get the sense that these players have never really been broken down and built back up the right way before now. Gus was coaching but he wasn’t teaching. Yeah he was teaching plays but he wasn’t teaching the “why”, which leads to the ability to adjust in-game. Harsin isn’t just teaching the how but the why which empowers players. I feel like with this approach, we’re always going to be able to make adjustments in-game rather than what Gus did which is just running the same 6 played in different sequences seeing if something “works”. It’s why we had no shot in some games because Gus didn’t have the teaching bases covered well enough to adjust.

I also get the sense that Harsin must be thinking “holy frick, did the previous staff teach these guys ANYTHING? The “football 101” statement was really telling. I really feel like these first two games are going to go a long way in developing a team that can read, think, and adjust on the fly by the time we get to happy Valley. I’m really eager to see what we look like, and how we game plan and adjust.

There was no game-planning with Gus, just running the same plays over and over. No “scheming” against a type of defense, or isolating a certain player or having a strategy to attack a certain scheme. Until now we have been woefully undercoached

It boils down to wanting a coach that does everything Harsin is talking about and also actually winning because of it. Like many here have described, I love hearing these quotes about the focus on detail, culture, discipline, etc. But I really hope it actually translates to wins.

I would also caution against assuming Gus didn't teach anything. It certainly appears like our players really are having to start from scratch, but it's hard to really know what Harsin's definition of "football 101" is vs Gus's "football 101" was without being out there on the field.

From my perspective, it seems entirely plausible that Gus implemented a used-to-be-successful offensive system that was as simple as he could possibly construct so his players' learning curve wasn't as steep. This means he got the success we saw in '10, '13, and '17 but his players don't appear to be "excelling" at the next level, at least in terms of knowing the game. (I know there are outliers...) I hope this isn't the case, but that's absolutely what it looks like.

If Harsin can both prepare these kids for the next level and get wins on the board - we could be in for a great Auburn football era. If the kids are prepared for the next level because they "know what's going on" but can't execute, that's going to be a serious disappointment.

tl;dr - have no idea what's going to happen.

Yeah that stood out to me as well. I realize there will be some sort of learning curve with a new staff coming in, no matter what. But with the football experience this team has coming back, there is really no reason to be having to teach "football 101" at this point.

Really frustrating that the old staff left the program in that state.
