School Record Highlights Final Day of Alabama Track and Fields’ Crimson Tide Invite

Senior Isaac Odugbesan used a toss of 20.66 meters to better the school shot put record set in 1980

Alabama track and field's Isaac Odugbesan broke a 42-year-old school record to put an exclamation point on the final day of competition at the 2022 Crimson Tide Invitational, held at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium this weekend.

Odugbesan, a three-time SEC shot put champion, unleased a throw of 20.66 meters on his final attempt of the competition to not only pick up the win but fly past Hreinn Halldorsson's school record of 20.54 meters set in 1980.

On the track, Talaya Lewis (11.36) and Ayla Stanisclaus (11.43) took the top top-two spots in the women's 100 meters, while Christal Mosley and Amara Obi went one-two in the women's 400 meters, going 53.12 and 54.10, respectively. Lewis' time ties her for eighth all time at UA.

Eliud Kipsang ran a huge 1:47.16 in the men's 800 meters to win by more than a second and a half, while Corde Long posted a career-best 50.80 to win the men's 400-meter hurdles by more than a half second. Long's time ranks him ninth all-time at Alabama.

Jekovan Rhetta, Tarsis Orogot, Mason Phillips and Demetrius Jackson combined for a blazing 38.86 to win the men's 4x100-meter relay, making them the second-fastest quartet in school history and the fourth fastest nationally this season.

Overall, Alabama tallied a dozen wins on the meet's final day.

Head Coach Dan Waters Said
"Before the weekend got started, I said that we've always walked away from our home competitions happy with the job we did, and that's especially true today. We had an amazing weekend all over the track and I'm really pleased with the effort by our team and what we were able to accomplish. We've still got a few things to work on over the next few weeks as we head into the championship season, but we're moving in the right direction. I'm super proud of Isaac (Odugbesan) and the way he keeps getting better and better as the season moves on. That throw was huge and puts him squarely in the national conversation. It was also good to take one of our oldest school records off the board. I want to thank everyone who helped put this weekend together. It takes a lot of people and a lot of effort to put on a first-class event like this and we're grateful to our staff, officials, administration and volunteers for all they did."
