It's just a terrible practice. There are plenty of ways to create bonds between a group of kids and teach them to like and respect your organization without the type of stuff that a lot of people did (and apparently still do). Add in the fact that it is generally done without a clear mind (whether drunk or, worse, under the influence of cocaine or whatever kids are doing now), and it's dangerous and even deadly.
