don't want to say it's worthless, but returning starters isn't all that in college football. I think Alabama generally ranks at the bottom and near dead last in that stat.
It much more important to a school like Iowa State (a place where they obviously don't rack up blue choppers every year) than it is Bama plus your backups obviously get a shite ton of PT during most of your regular season schedule.
ISU vs OU will be interesting this season and look forward to watching it.
ETA Lets not forget that they split last year so it won't be much of a stretch if they beat em again.

Using Ms St for the example with Dak Prescott and that team. Ranked #1 for how long with a average ranking class of 34-40?
It matters a lot.
And that team beat zero top 25 teams and got boat raced by GT in. the Orange Bowl

It doesn't matter if Miss St was falsely ranked #1 for any period of time, what matters is where they end up.
They beat nobody that year. 8-5 Auburn was over-ranked when they played them, so was 8-5 LSU and 8-5 Texas A&M. That was their best wins that season. When they finally played good teams, they lost. Finishing the season with 3 losses.
So no, Miss St doesn't really prove anything.
Not to mention Miss St occasionally pulls in 5 stars and a few 4 stars. 6 4 stars in 2012, 3 4 stars and 1 5 star in 2013. etc.
Everything you say justifies Iowa St to be a top15 team. But no way in hell a #4 spot.

If Leach would have had a spring last year, he wins those 3 games.
What if those 3 teams had a spring last year too?

None of those teams were transition an offense like MS St. An honest person can admit that.

UGA was installing a completely new O and trying to find its qb. Point is you and everyone else is just guessing at what happens if they have a spring game.

You made an easy change vs what MSU did and you know it.
Here is what you did in 2019:
Ran it 37 times and passed it 29 times per game (average)
In 2020, You ran it 37 times and passed it 30 times per game.
MSU went totally in a different way. The system has very little likeness, unlike UGA. It's not even CLOSE to being the major over haul MSU went through.

Ark, UGA, and Ole Miss
Man Ole Miss and Arkansas really got a leg up over state last year bringing in new coaches but getting that waiver from the ncaa so they could practice but State couldn’t.
What will happen THIS year now that we’re all on an even playing field.

Steve Robertson compiled this list...if you know, you know...
MSU was worse, much worse, in their last game than they were in their first...and here’s another news flash: NOBODY had a spring...all all those cute little “improving” stats for Leach at new schools all occurred at non-SEC schools...it was amazing to me how a simple rush 3 formula completely dismantled that offense last year...
