It’s a completely new defensive scheme. It’s reasonable that they might think that some of the 4-3 LBs aren’t what they need for the 3-4.
At some point you guys are going to have to get comfortable with change and transfers. This was never a coaching change where the new guy cleans up the stupid shite and makes a run. It’s a new program.

Complaining about roster management when the current coaching staff had almost nothing to do with how the roster is presently constructed is, in general, an absurd complaint

Rilsey, Tisdol, Steiner and Joko Willis are our back up LBs right now.. Moultry is probably on that list, Powell coming in next year. From a roster management prospective it doesn't make any sense to have that many people at one position.
We are doing the same at DB for some reason too.. KN just said Bydarrius Knighten is legit take because the coaches like him for depth. We already have too many guys and can't get all our best DBs on the field, so we take more? A roster has to be balanced.
And I haven't even brought up the focus on those positions as opposed to the position we most need a transfer at.. the only thing we're heard about that is that the coaches like our OL more than fans seem to.

jt33’s ongoing roster management frustration spanning multiple boards aside, there’s other good news.
KN seems to think Auburn is in better shape for Khurtiss Perry than originally though. Sounds like Mason and Eason are making him a priority.

Last time I’m going to comment on this (in the recruiting thread) and then I’m going to move on.
This coaching staff is building their own program. They are not continuing what Gus was building. They are not doing it on your timeline, either. And as much as I’m sure they’d love to kick the shite out of everyone on the 2021 schedule — Harsin is focused on what the program looks like in 5 years.
Don’t fall in love with the kids on the roster. Good chance some of them are going to find somewhere else to play football.
Harsin has said from the moment he was hired that he’s interested in doing this right but not right now. I’d go ahead and prepare to lower your expectations for this ‘21 season and the ‘22 class.

Look at the numbers we already have, plus in coming freshman.. the only way it makes sense to me is if they think they will strike out recruiting DBs/LBs this year and its their way of replacing that.

They don’t like the guys on the roster as much as you do. And they don’t care about the 2021 season as much as you do
You guys are in a world of hurt and you don’t know it. Pain is coming I hope I’m wrong but this looks like a long process to me
Edit: On a recruiting note, you don’t generally replace an upcoming class with transfers that will be on the roster for just couple of years. You bring in transfers to replace current guys on the roster

Harsin doesn't have 5 years to get this figured out (I know thats not exactly what you're saying.. just that its a long term plan), but the truth is he's got 2 years to win big and recruit at a top level or fans will be ready for him to go.

Talking about roster balance and management is related to recruiting though imo.

We recruited great on defense, had one of the top defenses and had some of the top defensive coaches in the country and all we heard was positive things about those guys. Now all of a sudden in half a year they can't play anymore and we need guys from Southeast Missouri for depth? How?

And I'm def not dropping my expectations lol... The bar is what it is, either Harsin rises the the occasion or he doesn't.

It is. I’ve done these threads for a long time and I’ve got a good idea what derails the thread and what doesn’t. This subject usually does it.

Aaaaaand this is how you know

Correct, which is why you didn’t need to say literally everything you just said.

Different. Defensive. Scheme. This really isn’t that hard to understand. I don’t know what else to tell you but please, for the love of Bo Jackson, stop fricking up the thread now.
Thank you.

I thought incoming transfer talk was for the recruiting thread. If its not I'll leave it out of here.

You don’t understand how a new defensive coach using a new defensive scheme doesn’t value the players that exist on a roster that they didn’t construct.
I can’t help you with that. Nobody can help you with that. Talk about transfers all you like here. Their impact on the current guys is also inbounds. But the persistent bitching about roster management when the current staff had nothing to do with how it’s currently assembled is not recruiting.

quote:Running a base 3-4 AU needs 2-3 extra bodies in the LB room. Plus no one has mentioned the offsides-machine, Moultry. I don't expect him back.
I don't understand taking a transfer LB. Its arguably our deepest position with 3 young talented guys backing them up.. KN makes it sound like its basically a lock for him too. Wouldn't surprise me at all if one of our current LBs transfers out now.

Personally, I’m not placing my stamp of approval on everything this staff is doing. Not saying it’s right or wrong, good or bad, etc. I’m only recognizing what seems apparent to me.
I’m reserving judgment on what’s happening until I see the results. I’m not a big instant gratification guy so I’m expecting those results to be a bit delayed based on some of the decisions they’ve made.
Who knows if this all works out I know a couple of things and I think you’ll agree with this too. Eventually, they’ve gotta bring in blue chip guys. Eventually, they’ve gotta develop players. When does it need to happen? Year 1? 2,3? All I know is sooner is better. That’s kinda where I’m at on all of this. Hope that helps explain where I’m coming from here

I think AU will continue to be top 10-15 in recruiting like we always are historically. I'm not expecting top 5 classes unless we start really cheating like UGA. I don't see that as likely. My hope is that the culture expectations and development are improved. We can win big that way, just like UGA can't with the recruiting budget of the Falcons.

That makes sense. They may literally take a 2022 spot but they’re not a freshman in the sense that they’ll hit the roster in 2022 and stay on for 4-5 years. These guys will be participating in a few months and out of town in a few years.

Tony Fair, the DT transfer from UAB, just committed to Auburn.
