No way the Vols will be back anytime soon. Not enough talent in the state and too nutty of a fan base. They fired a HOF coach on a whim and squandered years of bad hires. Beautiful place but unfortunately it is a mediocre program. They claim multiple national titles when they only have won one title in the 1998. The deception of thinking you are something you are not leads a fan base to have a mob mentality.

Their AP and UPI national title in 1951 doesn't count?

You make a good point. Do we need conference realignment with TAMU getting better?

Their last run, UGA/AU/Bama/Clemson was terrible. That was their recruiting hotbed. I dont see all four sucking at the same time again.

Auburn hired a HC with little to no recruiting in the SEC region. Now You need to hope Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, and some of the others flopped so Auburn can compete at that time again. Missouri is in the same situation. Needed Tennessee, UGA, South Carolina, Florida, and Kentucky to flopped so that Missouri can compete for the East Division. It happened for 2 straight years. Missouri did hired a much better HC and he is a much better recruiter. So time will tell if Missouri will compete for the East in two years. Maybe next year? Who knows.

Elite? Nope. Bowl eligibility is their ceiling.

People were saying the same thing about Alabama in 2006.

Is UT willing to make the commitment of resources and make the right hires up and down the program? Unlikely, but it’s not impossible. A lot of teams that are middling right now have that potential, Nebraska, Penn State, UCLA, but a lot of things have to come together.

Long story short; possible, yes.

Miami is trying to get back to relevancy and has been try to get the right hire for the past 16 years. Now they’re trying the Ed O approach and surrounding Handy Manny Diaz with the best assistants to mask his HC deficiencies.

The Vols can come back, but they may have to hire Mike Shula first if you catch my drift.

The comeback isn't happening any time soon. They're first going to have to clean up the mess they've made. The administration is a dumpster fire.

Hey, pal, I live right here in Middle Tennessee, and there have been countless days over the last ten years when I could ride all over town all day long and not see a stitch of that puke, inside-of-a-pumpkin orange being worn. Anywhere. By anyone.

Not really.

HS FB will somehow have to be resurrected in both Pennsylvania and California for both UCLA and Penn State
to make it back to elite status and that ain't happening.Simply not enough
athletes to go around and now the SEC is starting to pull recruits out of both places.

Nebraska's success in 70's and 80's had a lot to do with their walk-on and "S&C" programs. In the 90's is what due to accepting partial qualifiers and recruiting Texas...both of those things aren't really happening these days.

PSU probably has the best shot but still has to get by OSU every year.

I think so. They have to start with getting someone who can build their program and can get complete control. The SEC East is about to be run by UGA again so it's not like they have much competition in that division.

It's a good thing they have such a level-headed and patient fanbase.

Insert the obligatory Tennessee needs a competent AD before anything further happens.

Its sad to see a program like UT free falling. It doesnt give the SEC a good luck.

The team that will benefit the most? Imo its the Mizzou teams. But college football always has cycles and one day the Vols will find a pilot to pull them out of their nose dive.

It was obvious that UT was doing something fishy with the recruiting success they had after putrid few seasons under Pruitt. I think they became desperate and took short cuts.

Pruitt was thinking he could walk into the locker room and get the players to respond like a Saban with no cache on his resume. Too abrasive and players didnt want to put everything on the line for him. Fulmer was blind to this and forgot that the HC has to be a players coach and show he had their backs.

As long as Florida is in the SEC east UGA will never “run” it.

Alabama's problems were the result of a perfect storm: malfeasance, arrogance, rival's hatred, SEC office in league with UT, and incompetence, which resulted in draconian loss of scholarships. Not many can weather that. Still won an SEC title and had three 10 win seasons over the 11 years of the effects.

OTOH, UT has had none of Bama's issues until now with the confessed NCAA violations, yet they have been less successful than Bama was just from incompetence. 0 titles and 0 ten win seasons over the 13 years in the wilderness.

I don't think they will be back for a good long while. While there is a great bit of talent within a 200 mile radius, those, for the most part, will be taken by the bigger schools, and Tennessee high school football can't sustain them in big boy football. They are fricked.
