They went out and asked him to be their coach. Pretty fricking simple for all these simple minded ADs in the SEC. If you dont ask, you dont receive.

Alabama wasn't anything special. Nick Saban made it special. Go and hire a bad arse coach with a winning record. You'll win too.

Stop hiring losers like will muschamp. He has a losing record and couldn't even win at Florida.

Alabama hired Nick Saban because of Candy Edwards. Without her, Nick Saban never ends up in Alabama.

Remember when everyone thought Alabama was crazy for paying Saban $3.5 million a year? Fun times.

Was Candy Edwards at LSU when LSU hired Nick Saban?

Damn right $$$. Of all the dumb moves Alabama had made in the ten years previous to that hire, they made a genius move in breaking the bank to bring in Saban. Everyone laughed at us at the time, but who's laughing now? Saban's contract looks huge without context, but in terms of dollars per win he's one of the cheapest coaches in the country, and in terms of ROI he has made the University far more money than he will ever see. Paying Saban an amount that at the time seemed ridiculous was probably a move born more of desperation than business savvy, but in a single stroke Alabama basically destroyed the final vestiges of college football as having anything to do with college and dragged it into the 2010's and beyond. I'm not saying that's a good thing, I'm saying that was an inevitable thing, and if it had to happen I'm glad my school was the one to be at the forefront so we can reap the rewards of it.

Bama fans need to thank Spurrier for Saban being there.

Saban was initially making less per year at Alabama than he was at Miami if I recall right. He was making around $4.5 million a year with the dolphins. He had a shorter contract at Miami though.

Before or after RR said "no thanks"?

Saban was a gift to Bama that was all about timing, nothing more.

Does this mean that we should stop laughing at A&M for giving Jimbo 75 million?

Most coaching hires are about timing.

I feel like the Albert means scandal combined with mike price and the flop from Op gave Alabama the following persona:

quote:

Screw the ncaa and screw everyone else

Bama got ridiculed hard for all of it. They tried a few hires and Shula got his “signature” win over Florida. It didn’t matter.

Mal Moore had his sights set on the best and saban kept getting more and more available. Then it became a task with only one goal. Get nick saban and they did.

That kind of resolve came from a storied program that sold its soul for the best.....and it worked. The ROI has been remarkable.
