Anybody heard any update on Gary? I think it would be nice to have him around for depth purposes come tourney time. Not sure if he will be back.

The Case for the SEC Tournament

With the movement to cancel college basketball conference tournaments on the rise across the country, Alabama basketball's Nate Oats is leading the resistance

This isn’t from Coach Oats nor from Bama, but it’s the only thing I’ve seen posted since the last time it was discussed in Coach’s press conference:

I think when a new sticky gets added, they have to be bumped to be set in a certain order, but I could be wrong.

Sucks about no game today but there is still a bunch of games that could benefit Bama

#6 Houston is a 7.5 point favorite @Wichita State
#11 Iowa is a 1.5 point underdog @Wisconsin
#4 Ohio State is a 4.5 point favorite @Penn State
#3 Michigan is a 9 point favorite against Rutgers

Remember when a lot of us thought Rojas would get Reese's minutes? Good times.

I am still baffled at how much Rojas has struggled offensively compared to his JUCO numbers. He was actually quite good offensively in JUCO.

I know some of that won't translate because SEC defenders are going to way better, but you would think he would at least be converting his uncontested, wide open looks at a similar clip.

Free throws and wide open 3's and wide open lay-ups shouldn't be any different in the SEC than in JUCO.

If he just flat-out couldn't shoot a lick, he wouldn't have been able to put up those JUCO numbers, no matter how much worse the competition compared to the SEC.

Here are his JUCO numbers per-40:

Points: 29.4
FG: 50.4% (9.4/18.6)
2P: 53.8% (7.9/14.7)
3P: 38.4% (1.5/3.9)
FT: 79.5% (9.1/11.5)

REB: 10.5
AST: 3.4
STL: 2.3
BLK: 1.1
TO: 3.9

Here are is Bama numbers per-40:

Points: 9.7
FG: 30.8% (3.0/9.9)
2P: 36.4% (2.4/6.7)
3P: 19.0% (0.6/3.2)
FT: 62.5% (3.0/4.9)

REB: 10.2
AST: 1.4
STL: 1.7
BLK: 0.8
TOV: 3.5

Ahh, okay. I see now that there are new stickies. Makes sense.

He missed last year with the knee injury and has been bothered by a hand injury this year, then lost 12 pounds from covid or whatever he had. I am still holding out hope that he can be a solid player for us.

Yeah, my point wasn’t to beat up on him as much as to show that there almost has to be some sort of extenuating circumstances hampering his offensive form this season.

His 3s that he has taken this year have been uncontested, and FTs in D1 are no different than FTs in JUCO, and yet his numbers were in both are way down.

As I said prior, no way he puts up those JUCO numbers if he really is a terrible shooter.

I agree.

He hit two pretty clutch free throws vs South Carolina at the end of the game and has been rebounding pretty well lately. Hopefully he can have a good end to the season.

The 3P% stands out to me a lot, because Rojas has had some killer wide open looks at times and it seems like a lot of those attempts have looked like some of the Galin Smith/Javian Davis attempts we saw last year.

Transitioning from Juco ball to P5 D1 is always hit or miss and Rojas has been a bit dinged up this year to be fair, but I was expecting him to be better than this offensively. I wasn't expecting him to carry the offense or anything, but 31/19/63 is just flat out not good. He's just way too inefficient for my liking.

A hand injury can for sure affect your shooting, I assume that's what the problem has been. Oats has mentioned the hand a few time when bringing up Rojas.

I don't disagree with that, but Rojas hasn't shot the ball well at any point this year.

After the first three games of the season he was 4-17 (24%)/1-7 (14%)/2-4 (50%).

He has to be a better shooter than that and I have to assume he will be next season if he's still here.

I think he may be in a shooting slump, and I'm sure the injuries/covid haven't helped his play. But, overall, I just don't think he has the talent to play at this level.

also, when you only 3-5 minutes at a time to play, it's not real easy to get into the flow of things.

That's why those 40 minutes #'s are meaningless to me.

I'm certainly not arguing he's played well.
