If your program had to get a new head coach next season for whatever reason, which route would you want them to go?

A. Offensive guru with an emphasis on high powered offense
B. Defensive guru with an emphasis on controlling the clock and elite defense
C. Position/ST coach with emphasis on being a program manager over a specific side of the ball.

Say they all have similar experience and qualifications for the job. Which do you want leading your program?

Great defenses are now completely irrelevant. A real offensive guru is worth significantly more

Yeah, tell that to OU fans every year when they dominate the Big 12 then go play an SEC defense in the playoffs and get destroyed.

I'm taking defense.

(A) sounds like a no-brainer, but HCs like Mullen who can maintain firm control of the offense and be successful with the other aspects of running a program are rare imo. Look at what happened with Sarkisian at USC/Washington and Kiffin at USC

Kirby and what is considered by far the consensus #1 defense just got boatraced by Alabama’s offense. Obviously fielding a HS level defense will frick you over

All things considered equal, offense > defense.

Nick Saban-Defense
Drinkwitz-Offense and who won the game? Alabama!
I know Nick has the edge with recruiting. But look what he have done all those years!

Nick is not an offensive HC! He is a defensive HC! Also need to hire a good OC. Also need to be a good recruiter.

C - the only option associated with winning a championship the last 2 years in a row.

B

You don't have to control the clock, but you do need to give your defense some breaks. If you have a good defense, then you'll always have a chance. You don't need the best offense, but just one that's competent.

What has gotten lost in the SEC shuffle from great defense to great offense is that our defenses have been going downhill for many years. Now it's reached historically low levels and everyone is acting like it happened over night.

Also, you can win SEC championships with a bad offense (LSU 2011), but you can't with a bad defense.

Defense is not outdated and never will be. Once d.cs are able to stop the current system with faster players, the offense will adapt and run power running style. The lack of spring and summer programs have devastated the D. I doubt the 2020 effect will continue to last. Don't let the recency bias blind you. 2014 OSU won with power, 2015 Alabama won with Henry. Without Clemson's defense in 2016, and 2018 they don't win. Even UGA-Bama this year would look like a completely different game without the interceptions/Alabama's run d.

Extremely relevant but possibly great is not necessary if serviceable or above average. LSU proved this last season. However, I think they're an exception. Just about any other NC before them had a great defense. There's a bunch of losers scoring plenty of points to win football games.

Lots of missing factors. Are we assuming the other side of the ball coordinator is at least good? Are they both similar recruiters?

Last few NCs have been won by top notch recruiters with an elite OC/DC

I agree in the defense...but what I think is that most DC’s don’t have enough Barry Odom in them...he is truly the only chess player in the league.

You have to be able to get some stops no matter what route you go but I do remember a awesome defense that played Clemson in Arizona and it still took a KO return and an insides kick to secure that game and the title that night. Bama could not stop Watson that night and that was one of the best Bama defensive teams of all time.

Game changed when 6’4 kids that realized they couldn’t shoot from outside decided to go catch the football was a better choice.

But your right. Clemson got just enough stops in 2016 and 2018 it wasn’t the 44 points that won it was only giving up 16. Its not about shut outs or yards per game anymore. It’s about being good enough on defense to get just enough stops or stops at critical moments of the game.Making a team kick FG’s instead of giving up TD’s
