We have the highest paid coordinator in college football with Sark. But, we have Golding as our DC. It makes no sense.

Davis and Lewis were not the only Alabama players at the combine in Indianapolis who, unprompted, brought up communication when asked about the defensive breakdowns in the LSU and Auburn losses.
Wow.

We’re trying to run an NFL defense with a bunch of teenagers. The reason we kicked most everyone’s arse but struggled against Auburn and Ole Miss 8 years ago is the same reason we struggle against most everyone now. Nobody runs pro-style offenses anymore. And a 19-year-old safety can’t adapt a complex defensive scheme on the fly to a non-traditional offensive look the same way a 28-year-old safety can.

Why keep creating threads about defense?
Posted on 10/11/20 at 9:23 pm to Panthers4life
Because they replied in some other thread but didn't get the attention they needed. May not have said the same thing, but that is the reason for starting another conversation. You can see the same thing with people in small groups within a larger congregation. When someone brings up something and the people in their group don't respond to it, they will leave their group and bring up similar conversation within another group.
That's not a knock on the op, just the psychology behind it. I think Shaft usually bring good stuff and i think the communication issue is a huge problem and if it is solved this week, uga will be in for a bad night. I think we win by 2tds anyway.

Translation: the coaches aren’t getting the damn play called in time when teams go fast. Line up and play base defense and just make a play! Don’t stand there looking at the sidelines while the play develops around you.

The pattern matching defense we run is pretty complicated especially since it is ran “ on the fly” so to speak depending on route of the receiver so I can see why younger players struggle to get on the field and make mistakes sometimes . I still would like to see us play some zone sometimes , keep things in front, make QBs throw in tight windows and give DL time to get some sacks

Bear, it’s not just the secondary having assignment issues, it’s the whole defense. Saban, and by extension, Golding are still trying to play chess before the snap by adjusting the defense based on everything the offense is doing pre-snap, sometimes changing the call 2 or 3 times before the snap. That’s fine if the offense will sit there and let you counter their every move, but they’re not. They are going fast and catching us in the middle of a change more often than not and gashing an unprepared defense that looks like a deer in the headlights trying to sort out their responsibilities. This is what’s killing us. Saban needs to (and maybe he needs to hear it too) tell Golding that it’s better to be ready for the play and not in the perfect call than to be changing to the perfect call and get caught flat footed.
We have great athletes over there, let ‘em play! So maybe they aren’t in exactly the right coverage or stunt or blitz. A great athlete that’s sure of what he is supposed to do will have a good chance of making a play. But if he’s in the perfect scheme but unsure and overthinking things, the defense will look like it did last night. And pretty soon, the players get frustrated and start losing confidence in the scheme and the coaches because they don’t know what to do and they are getting gashed and shite just breaks down. We’re at that point. They need to rethink this defense before it costs us a chance at another title.

You know what annoys me is the fact that they wont call timeouts during the game. Kids are obviously confused and tired af.

Yea in the first half( whole game) we got caught running guys on the field when OM would be in the red zone , sitting there with 3 timeouts
And our pattern matching defense heavily involves the LBs especially in crossing routes underneath .... that communication between the DB and LBs is crucial and we don’t seem to be on the same page at all.... here is hoping to a better week, Saban will have them ready

Because there’s nothing to really talk about on offense except how tremendous it looks post Tua era.

If the problem were really that simple I'm sure Saban would change up his defense to conform to the times we are living in. Want to know how I know this? He had abandoned his long-standing offensive philosophy completely by the start of the 2016 season and hasn't looked back. The issue is likely a combination of things that, together, aren't as easily solved.
