They’d need a combination of the right coaching staff and luck. By luck I mean Florida Georgia and the west powers to be down big time. It’s not as simple as people think.

South Carolina will never be consistently good in football.

We just have to enjoy the rare run of success.

For one thing, South Carolina just doesn’t have a lot of flash. Stadium, uniforms and mascot are all kind of blah. No real tradition, championships, or legendary players. State’s not very visible nationally.

Nothing naturally jumps out at you. And now with Clemson being as good a program as there is with a relatively young coach, you can count on a lot more mediocrity from South Carolina.

They cannot financially compete with Florida, Georgia, VOLS, Bama, Auburn, LSU (and Aggy).

The state of South Carolina does not have as much talent as Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi.

Their facilities are not as nice as the 7 aforementioned schools.

They do not have the history that tBig 6 have.

They are COCKS

The right coach would make the Cocks a national power in a couple of seasons. You have the resources and location that every program wants. Need to pony up a $10 million coaching salary to get the right man for the job.

Our board of trustees which are half Clemson alums and I’m not even joking about that will ensure our eternal failure

My opinion is our athletic program would rather be more “well rounded”
Than just good at football

What’s holding SC back is a lack of history and tradition, and not being cut-throat in a conference of cut-throats. You’re not all-in on winning.

Hell, at LSU, the AD doesn’t even have to make bad hires to get fired. The last one got fired for suspending the SEC Champion basketball coach for getting wiretapped. And we just flat-out didn’t like the guy.

They never invested in football until after Clemson had became formidable in the 60s. Historical reputation also has a lot to do with it. Kentucky is always going to be good in basketball, Alabama will always be good in football unless there are things such as ncaa sanctions simply because of name. I can recall being at a Bama Kentucky basketball game in 85 or so and Kentucky came out in those blue uniforms and I thought, how cool is it to put THAT uniform on. Carolina doesn't do that to u.

You have had two hall of fame coaches the last two decades on the sideline and neither could win SEC titles.

So it's not coaching necessarily.

I think it ties into just not being quite good enough to keep up with the Big Six.

There’s really one answer. You’re not putting enough money, over decades into the program.

You want top 10 results, you need a top 10 coach. Same with facilities. The last piece is the administration of the school has to go all in. Over decades. You might slide for a while with the facilities, but not the other two.

1. They share their state with Clemson. Who, like it or not, has always had a better football program than USCjr.

2. They play in the sec. They don't have the resources that alot of the other programs have that they compete with for talent and wins.

3. They're south Carolina.

It's definitely recruiting. Not geographically positioned well and competing against all top SEC school who poach SC. Add in the recent success of Clemson and it makes it even harder.

But. Clemson has done it so why not SC? Takes a good, smart, supportive AD and a great coach. Spurrier could've maybe done it if he would've been at SC in his prime. It's crazy that he only won 1 NC in his time at UF. Crazy. 6 SEC titles yet 1 NC.
