Their rational is based on an urban legend told to carpetbaggers
Never happened, no more than gators getting flushed down the sewers and growing to enormous size
They are cancelling their tradition essentially due to a rumor based on a chain letter based on the weekly world news

, there is horrific historic racist imagery associated with the phrase
Goes to look up how it is racist...
Okay, so apparently the horrible history is that the African American children of slaves were used as bait for gators. That is truly terrifying.
That said, is that a direct correlation to the phrase "gator bait"? I mean, were people in Florida seeing African-American children and using the term "gator bait" to refer to them even after the fact? If not, I don't think the phrase is racist. If so, then yeah, it probably was.

But completely untrue. An urban legend in no way backed up by facts or logic.

Might as well cancel the alligator as a mascot, based on this.

No idea. There's a lot of articles from the 1900s to the 1920s that seem to imply it happened. NY Times, Miami New Times, Time magazine, Richmond Times Dispatch, etc. Apparently it made people money too - they made toys and postcards about it.
This is crazy...
That said, I am not saying get rid of the cheer.

See the fine print disclaimer at the end of the article you linked. The whole thing is bullshite so they decided to cover their asses at the end so they didn't get hit with libel.
"Despite confirming the widespread dissemination of such grotesque representations of African Americans in the 19th and 20th centuries, however, the existence of these artifacts does not suffice to prove that black children were literally used as alligator bait in the South. Neither do press reports dating back to the time period when the practice was supposedly commonplace."

Former Florida player and coach Steve Spurrier understands Fuchs’ decision.
“It kind of surprised me, but I didn’t know there was anything racial about it,” Spurrier said. “But when (athletic director) Scott Stricklin told me about some of the history of it, I said, ‘Let’s get rid if it.’ "
Basically if Spurrier didn’t say that, he would’ve been canceled.

They also said that there were giant gators in the sewers of New York.
You gonna base policy on urban legends now?

I think the simpler answer is Spurrier is OK with it because he doesn’t really give a damn about fan cheers. I think he heard the supposed history, doesn’t have a strong opinion on the various cheers and was fine with one less.

I didn't say that. I'm just listing the sources. I never said there was anything beyond anecdotal evidence, and I am fully aware that for all the gripes about the media now, it was practically pure sensationalism back in the day.
