As the owner of a French Bulldog which has similar issues I found it an interesting read. I am sure will evoke some differing opinions.
If you are not a dog person probably not worth your time.

I like the look of the Olde English Bulldogge. Looks much more like the earlier Ugas and according to the article, much more healthier than the English Bulldogs of today. I mean I love Uga but maybe he needs to get back to his fighting weight days lol.....

We tailgate at Hoke Smith which is across from the Georgia Center where Uga stays pre-game. Kids love to go see him etc before they load him up and take him to the game.
I will tell you it does look like the dog labors to breath and walk. I agree the older bulldogs seemed less forced.
I love me some Uga as a "bullie" breed guy and have often thought about getting an English. But those who have them often talk about all the health issues, lifespan etc. They love their dogs and share how great of a breed to have but comes with challenges.
Hence we went French which has some similar issues but not as profound.
They are awesome dogs.
Thanks fixed to the correct Letter Case....

Quick lesson:
Uga = dog
UGA = school

Uga = dog
UGA = school

Labrador Retriever man here.
However my neighbor had a BEAUTIFUL white English Bulldog......dead ringer for Uga but I felt so damn sorry for that dog. Exactly what you described very labored just to walk. He also got this condition where it looked like his eyelid had flipped inside out. He probably lived about 7 years or so and they went to get him up one morning and he had died in his sleep.
I know he paid mucho $$$$ for that dog. Shame he couldn't have lived longer. He was a good looker for sure.

I remember seeing a post on imgur a few years back that compared several dog breeds now vs what they looked like 50 - 75 years ago. It was sad. We've fricked up a lot of breeds over the years, the bulldog being the most conspicuous example.
Also MSU may as well use a mutt, theirs looks like a dumpster dog anyway.
Edit: found it

Didn't the Seilers and UGA state that they were going to move the line to a healthier build similar to the earlier bulldogs, with longer legs, a slightly longer snout, and a less wrinkly face? I swear I read that somewhere.
Either way, the dogs are less healthy than they used to be. The Seilers can claim what they want, but the data shows it. More recent Ugas have had shorter reigns. Heck, two of them didn't even last three years. It smacks of inbreeding to create a certain look.

Yep, I'm used to everything being typed UGA out of habit that I forget the use of a proper name......

I am at a point where I wish they would rescue any of the bulldog breed and use them as Uga. The inbreeding has caused all kinds of problems and while I love English Bulldogs, I would be fine with giving others in the classification the honor.

The uga line isn't inbred. That's just something our rivals say.

I think he means the dogs, not the people.

In all seriousness, though, I’m pretty sure the Uga line has seen its share of inbreeding.

Since my reply was pretty terse, just wanted to let you know there wasn't any ill intent there. Just figured living in Athens, you'd appreciate knowing that there technically is a difference. You're good peeps in my book.

The Uga line is inbred below the Ugas. People want a dog related to Uga and that’s where the inbreeding comes in. The Seilers try to breed the standing Uga with a bully that’s not related. We bred our dog to Uga III. Pretty cool as a kid watching Uga hump your dog in your back yard. They took the pick of the litter but the timing didn’t work out for him to become the next Uga. He was eventually given as a present to a family friend of their’s.
A lot of the health problems with the Uga line have to do with the desire for an all white dog. It’s basically an albino and comes with the health problems as such. Thus the movement to get away from an all white Uga.

None taken at all.
Honestly, I should know that.
So frankly thanks for correcting me

all purebred dogs have some degree of inbreeding in their line.
Of course, but the default connotation of inbreeding is that Uga is fricking his sister or something which isn't true.

I don’t know why we don’t have the American Bulldog as our mascot. It’s more aggressive looking and I’m sure it has a lot less issues.

You come across as ignorant of how dog breeding and bloodlines are done. For years almost every English Bulldog line in the country had a relation to Uga, hopefully new breeding stock ends that.
