What kind of recruiter is new Auburn offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr? And … what kind of coach?
To get some insight into Bicknell, who was hired Monday night by the Tigers, we checked in with David Johnson of OM Spirt, the Ole Miss site for 247Sports. Not only did Bicknell spend the previous three seasons at Ole Miss, but he also coached Johnson’s son, Rebels offensive lineman Eli Johnson.
AUC: How would you describe Bicknell as a recruiter?
JOHNSON: He’s a good recruiter — a very good recruiter. He was able to forge some really solid relationships with recruits and their families and that paid off.
AUC: Who are some of the better players he helped land for Ole Miss?
JOHNSON: Well, he was in on everybody on the offensive line, but we just list who a recruit’s primary recruiter was based on geography. But he was very active. Every offensive lineman, he recruited. His areas were Arkansas and northern Louisiana. He recruited Nick Broeker (in 2019), who was a freshman All-American at left tackle for 247Sports.
AUC: How did he fare overall in his region; Arkansas doesn’t have a ton of recruits and getting solid prospects from Louisiana never is easy.
JOHNSON: No doubt about, but he was involved in the recruiting of receiver Jadon Jackson (from Arkansas) and also was involved in the recruitment of (offensive tackle) Darius Thomas (of Arkansas). He went over to Arkansas and helped pull two of that state’s top players to Ole Miss. I would expect Auburn to have him continuing to recruit in northern Louisiana because he has so many relationships there from his days as head coach at Louisiana Tech.
AUC: Your son played for Bicknell the last three seasons. What does he think of him?
JOHNSON: He loved him — absolutely loved him. He thinks he’s a very good coach. A solid, technical offensive line coach. He’s very disciplined with his players. Very tough, but very fair.
From a source in the coaching industry …
-“He’s a diligent recruiter. He just doesn’t really seek credit. He’s a legit (recruiter). He’s very thorough at what he does.”

And finally … an interesting note …
How did Bicknell land at Ole Miss? He can thank Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Bicknell and Manning were both with the Giants when they won the Super Bowl on Feb. 5, 2012. Per AuburnTigers.com, “During the 2011 season, the Giants' line anchored an offense that finished fifth in the NFL in passing while only allowing 28 sacks.”
Manning, an Ole Miss alum, was so impressed with Bicknell he put in a call to Luke and recommended him for the job.

Yeah, given everything that's happened and stuff being spread about Gus. I think this is a solid hire. I don't get the criticism

Good grief - literally nothing is good enough for some of you folks.
Solid hire IMO.

Jack Bicknell Jr.
NFL OL coaching experience & SB ring
P5 & SEC OL coaching/recruiting experience
He had a decent run as a G5 HC at LaTech
Not too old, looks/sounds super personable
No prior relationship with Gus
He was Flutie's center at BC
Truly a great hire and upgrade over what we had. Sorry to be so optimistic...

Well, now there’s a quote full of positivity towards the hire, I should have seen that in your grim life perspective, that was you giving props to the hire. It’s so clear now.
Thank you for pointing that out son.
