I mean maybe....but didn't Carolina fans used to sellout Willy B even when they weren't winning?

That's how it was when I was at Bama, but I think we had to pay like $4 for the season. Tickets were part of registration.

We paid $5 per game... last year iron bowl was in Birmingham. But again, our system wasn't just handing them out. I did get to skip the Coleman thing, since athletes had a preferred system of enrolling in classes.

All about the bottom line. They figure they make more money selling some tickets than no money giving tickets away for free. Most, if not all, of the decision makers could not care less about crowd noise relative to profit.

Have you seen who UF enrolls now? Not exactly the football fan type.

I agree with this Gator. Same problem striking several SEC campuses including UF, UGA, Alabama, Auburn. I blame heightened admission requirements and students proliferating SEC campuses from growing metro areas, especially Atlanta (NTTAWWT), who are the children of southern transplants.

fricking this. Especially the early season games. It’s usually hotter than balls in Baton Rouge.

I’m comfy in the AC at my house watching.

Coaching Saban is making students wear ankle bracelets in 2020.

Only the students that have been repeatedly observed leaving the stadium at halftime, or sometimes even before halftime, will be required to wear the ankle bracelets.

Stop exaggerating.

Some schools do this. Bigger ones don’t because they want money.

I’m sure LSU doesn’t mind the student ticket revenue, but compared to every other revenue source, it’s pennies.

Student sections at large schools aren’t large enough to seat the entire student body. Charging for tickets serves a similar purpose to TAF priority points.

When I was an undergrad, some schools gave preference to upperclassmen for student tickets, so frosh and sophs were excluded. I don’t know if charging for tickets has replaced that.

Can't blame students for not wanting to watch State U SEC school pound Directional University with a 12:00 kickoff in 100 degree September weather with a hangover.

Amen to that, especially when you can go to an air conditioned bar and watch on a high definition TV or do so from home

Every game is on tv. Every game. Why would I spend money, gas, and time on a hot as hell September day to drive and watch a squash match against Northwestern St. when I could watch it from my recliner with the AC on?

It’s been a growing trend for the last 5-10 years, and not just with students. The students get singled out because most student sections are general admission that fill up from the bottom up. So when it’s not full, all the empty seats are up top. But scan the rest of the stadium and there are plenty of empty seats at many games in the reserved seating.

There are many reasons, most touched on in here. I think the advent of HDTV coulpled witn every game being on TV is the main culprit. And a secondary problem to this is the length games last now because of all the TV timeouts. A game lasting 3 1/2 to 4 hours is just ridiculous. Kickoff times don’t help, but I think attendance would be slightly better for those 11 AM kicks against East Popcorn St if they weren’t on TV.

Whatever the case, I think college football has a huge problem on its hands over the next 10-15 years if this trend continues. I’m not sure the younger generation, as a whole, cares enough about the sport to sustain filling 100,000 seat stadiums. When the bubble pops, it could be ugly. I think it’s one of the more fascinating subjects around the sport right now.

Just look at the college section on any game in person or on a random game on the TV, half the students are on their phones. That is why attendance is down. All of us, but particularly th students of today would far rather interact with social media than the people physically around them. For this next generation:

Phone seeing what people are saying + couch > game + telling people on phone what is going on at game.

I can’t wrap my head around why it bothers people that interest in college football is declining. People move away from their hometowns more than ever now, especially young people moving west after school. There are far better things to do on a Saturday in September or October in Colorado, Idaho or Montana than to stay stuck inside watching football.

declining attendance in college football...

it's 100% ticket cost, plain and simple. I just said this on another board but UGA played in 4 opponents stadiums this year, all 4 of which had a face value in the triple diigts. AU was damn $140! In 10 years you could be looking at almost $200 for a face value regular season ticket. That's simply ludicrous and people are getting tired of paying it.

No, there are many factors. Blaming it 100% on one thing is naive. It may be 100% the reason you don’t attend many games, but most SEC stadiums are completely full, or close to it, for the higher priced games.

But I’m with you on the prices. I refuse to pay that much to sit in a stadium for 4+ hours. My house is much more comfortable.

I think you are missing his point.

Ticket costs force fans to make decisions on which games to go to.
Fan money is a scarce resource.
How many times will a UGA fan fly to New Orleans, book a hotel/car, and get tickets for a game. The answer is, "it depends upon the price".

If I have a budget of $7000 for UGA games this season, I go to fewer games the more expensive individual games become. It doesnt matter which games get more expensive. The cost of going to Vandy could double, and that is going to impact my choices for other games.

Tickets for the student section need to be free or greatly reduced. They need to get the students involved. Think of it as an investment for the future. Those kids are your future season ticket holders..your luxury box owners...
As far as the other attendance problems..shitty starting schedules, shitty. games ...quite frankly not a single SEC should be scheduling anyone not a Division 1 school. I’m pissed at my school Texas A&M. A Thursday night home opener, three 11:00 morning kickoff other games. Why is the SEC letting Jerry Jones host the A&M/Arkansas game? This should be a great home and home series. Both schools would see a packed home stadium. The schools have decided TV broadcast time at ridiculous times and days are more important than providing their fans with a meaningful game experience..
The second thing is the expense..a family of four? Can’t afford it...
400+ on Tickets Good luck finding anything that cheap for a decent game.
200 on food and drink
200 (if your lucky) on a hotel room game weekend rates
200 gas, snacks, traveling, misc...
$1000.00 minimum to see a Thursday night or an 11:00am game against a shitty opponent?? As compared to being at the ranch with 10/12 friends bbqing, watching it on the big screen, bird hunting afterwards. For the cost of meat and beer. Hmmmm
Until the schools start making the game day experience more meaningful than a rinky TV airing at odd hours, attrndance will continue to decline. The SEC has the most incredible venues and traditions in college football...but expensive, second rate games at inconvenient times is a no brainer for losing support.
