Why? Is it because they are so often involved in heavy traffic plays?

From what I can see the 2 most popular positions for injury are RB and LB.

They are both positions that have the most contact/movement, and when you look at the mass/speed being moved by the players, I think that puts more strain on their ligaments.

Maybe they should be put in braces or something like that full time to offer more support. Don't know.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. It’s a huge change from the work load in highschool to college and it’s only getting a wider gap. We can’t really overtrain in highschool because of parents and teachers wanting kids home and studying. College is a different animal. The constant stress on the ligaments and joints can’t be great.

Even with baseball, College pitchers have the same issue. That’s why so many injuries happen to freshman pitchers in college. Work load is a lot more.

These type of injuries don't seem to plague other programs at the rate they are hitting us.

The ACL ‘epidemic’ continues in NFL

David Chao..."Profootballdoc"...is a former NFL head team doc 17+years and practicing orthopedic surgeon.

"In fact, the last five years have seen an average of about 23 ACL tears before the start of the regular season.

Why do these happen? Didn’t we correct this problem with the most recent CBA by reducing practice time and, in particular, contact in practice?

The reality is that limiting contact practice may reduce some injuries but will not reduce ACL tears.

The vast majority (70-80%) of ACL tears happen without direct contact,
as was reportedly the case with Henry and Worrilow on Tuesday.

As players get bigger/faster/stronger, the ACL stays the same size. (Exactly the point I made earlier in this thread.) Without contact, there is a premium on speed, precision and tempo in practice. When a sharp cut is made and the foot sticks in the ground — much like a ski binding not releasing — the injury happens.

Unfortunately, given all this, ACL injuries are unpreventable.

Any sort of ACL prevention program, which can be effective to some extent for the untrained athlete and females, have not been proven effective in the NFL. And in the course of their regular workouts, NFL athletes already perform much of the muscle training included in such prevention programs.

Offensive linemen and some defensive linemen are mandated to wear knee braces in college. But for the most part, that is not the case in the NFL. Many athletes resist wearing braces in the NFL, as they feel it restricts them. Modern brace technology is excellent, and as an orthopedist, I recommend prophylactic knee brace usage. But players often value performance and technique over protection that feels restrictive to them. And the fact is, while use of knee braces can help, it does not prevent all ACL tears.

History tells us there will be about 20 more ACL tears before kickoff in the season-opening game."

we are past, just bad luck, stage imho.

hit'em hard and fast in the 1st qtr getting a sizeable lead. then ground and pound ball control the remainder. lets hope more genius players dont get themselves suspended at the worst possible time.

lets hope kool hand pete is the football wizard hes supposed to be.

btw, bama players arent as big as they were when saban first arrived. he no longer recruits the 260# lbr en mass. occasionally, maybe but had to go smaller and quicker to match rpo scheme.

Why does it seem like only Bama suffers these type devastating injuries?
I know we're mainly focused on Bama, but I just don't hear about other teams with injuries with any regularity.

See the post above about the "epidemic" in the NFL.

Unfortunate injury but these things happen. I'm riding with the youngsters we have and I expect the coaching staff will make the necessary adjustments. I'm curious as to what happens with Dylan going forward. The ACL injury is far from career ending nowadays. Dylan will bounce back but will he bounce back in the NFL or at Bama? Everyone says the two freshman we will put on the field at ILB are studs who will get better with game experience so we may have seen the last of Dylan in crimson. Time will tell.

furthermore, I think that going all air raid on folks would hurt our defense, keeping them on the field for way too long. I think that the Sark/run-first approach is still the play here.

Im with you here Funky. Shortening the game with long drives and productive runs might be the key at this point

This is not a jinx but what happens if one of these guys goes down over the course of the season? I mean we’ve had a lot of defensive injuries these past few seasons.

Ale Kaho or even moving Chris Allen inside. Possibly using McKinney as a hybrid? We might be susceptible to the run with the latter if it was longterm

Moses will lose too much money by not coming back to school next year. He is a 1st round talent healthy. Would be a 4th or 5th rounder if he jumps to the NFL after the season, especially if isn't able to get healthy by the NFL Combine.

4th or 5th rounder? Man stop. Dylan will still be a 1st or 2nd rounder if he leaves for the NFL.

I'm just wondering why we're banging on Tuesday when we just got out of camp...

Rest is a weapon and so is maintenance.
