Alabama has added a former NFL coach to its off-field staff.
Ken Whisenhunt was added to the Crimson Tide’s staff directory as a special assistant to head coach Nick Saban on Wednesday evening. Whisenhunt is now one of four staff members with a similar title, joining Sal Sunseri (senior special assistant), Joe Pendy and Todd Watson.
Whisenhunt spent the past two seasons as an offensive analyst at Penn State. This will be just his third job at the college level. His first job after his playing pro career ended was at Vanderbilt where he coached special teams, tight ends and H-backs from 1995-96. All of his other jobs in the next two decades-plus were in the NFL, including a pair of head coaching stints.

Ugh. I’ve rarely been more excited to see a guy move on than I have been with DD. Saban has an infatuation with him that is unearned. He must be a practice hero because he always looks like shite during the games.

Bama roster update includes early enrollees, still has OL Darrian Dalcourt listed (On3/BI)

How do you know it is unearned. You have been in the position group meetings and have attended a lot of practices.

I acknowledged that he may be a hard working practice hero. The problem is his play on Saturdays. He gets whipped every time he plays against a decent defense.

We lost a lot of OL to the portal. This may be NS's attempt to keep an experience player to help us get through spring. Who knows he may can get bigger and stronger and be a better player.

I hope he does. I doubt it though since he hasn’t gotten better in the 4 seasons he’s already had.

I think he's plenty big and strong. And by most all accounts he is smart. But he needs to get quicker. If you watch the tape you see that he's strong at the point of attack. But he has trouble reaching defenders. Losing a few pounds might help.

Yeah smart isn’t a question at all. He’s been the academic player of the week for a couple of games. Losing weight could help. He also needs to be more aggressive.

I understand your frustrations. He has had his issues, as have most of the O linemen. But if we had a better option, I have to think the coaches would have played someone else. That's not a pleasant thought to consider, but I think it's the case. It seems like both Seth and DD have parts of their game that the other don't excel at. I don't see where having DD back can hurt. If someone else beats him out, then they'll play instead of him. I'm hopeful that Rees can help the entire OL out with better scheming and play calls. Maybe that's wishful thinking, but a guy can dream.

This is one of the reasons why I'm interested to see if he can excel at Guard. At Center he had to worry about making a good snap to the QB and then executing his assignment. Maybe he'll be able to play faster without having to worry about pre-snap protection adjustments (if the QB isn't making those), making a good snap, and then executing his assignment.

I disagree. The biggest issue that I saw was that once or twice a quarter he'd get blown up by a bull rush.

I haven't gone back to review all the games, but my initial impression while watching games was that Seth was overpowered physically more often than DD. Seth seemed quicker, therefore better on positioning himself to block, though, and on pulling and getting upfield on run blocks. Of course, if you don't get into position quickly enough, then the man gets past you, too. So DD being stronger didn't always translate into success. Maybe I'm not recalling things the way they were.

I didn't notice that. It could be so. I didn't watch every snap. What I remember seeing is a center who got a lot of pancakes when he could combo block with the guard. He's about as big as most any center you'll find.

IF NS and his OL coach are granting him another year of scholarship then this is ok with me. They get paid millions to make decisions so we can sit around and gripe and cheer those decisions.
I am sure he listened to the fans when he did not renew the coaching contracts of the OC and DC from this past year

It is a forum for discussion, brochacho. We don't have to like everything our coaches and players do to be fans.

I agree but the brow beating seems to be over the top regarding this one player. Whether he starts or not is immaterial for me. He will be available for scrimmages with a depleted OL roster. Like non coaches on this site know better than our new OL coach. We are going to be more run heavy and this might be up his wheel house.
