So, I have healed enough to watch that play again. After, watching it a few times... it appears to me that it was not a pass, but an option left with the punter as the pitch man. The guys running down field did not really appear to be running routes. It’s possble it was an option pass with the punter throwing it. The Bama end contained it and that was that. Not sure if it makes me feel better or worse.

but..it wasn't. It was the same play we ran against bama in the '12 SECCG where the upback passes to the uncovered guy. It was just executed extremely poorly.

It was a fake option. As dumb as that play was I can guarantee you we were not running an option to our punter on 4th and 11 as our first option.

You sure? Looks like a different play there. The guy who caught it just ran straight and was open.

and that was the exact same defense bama lined up in this year, with swift being uncovered. The problem is that in '12 they just stayed in their formation, while in '18 they recognized it and covered him up. If we snapped it immediatley swift is as open as rambo was and is running free. I can only assume there was a backup plan if covered to peel off which he did.

I still think that if we trot Woerner or Nauta or any other "normal" punt protector back there swift is wide open.

Thankfully the guy who had the ball is no longer here. There were other open routes and the one read and run was never going to get it.

It looks like he was running left and bailed on it when the DE contained.

I thought it was an option the first few times I watched it as well. I thought surely we would not try to pitch to our punter though........whatever it was it was stupid.

I’m thinking Justin was supposed to toss it to the punter who had the option to kick it or run for a first if it was there. Justin defied orders and tried to keep it. Probably would of ended up a kicked ball if it would of been done correctly. Look at Jakes body language, he as expecting the ball.

No he wasn't. He sold it like he was supposed to do. It was the same play design as 2012.

Did swift run straight forward on his route?

No because he had a linebacker over top. The route is a corner route against man coverage in that technique.

you think our plan was to snap it to the upback, who would then toss it back to the punter? Why not just snap it to the punter?

not necessarily but the play was already fricked at that point. Kirby said after that in all their scout work they noticed bama's punt safe lineup hadn't changed since he was there in 2012 (which honestly blows my mind that saban could overlook something like that). And you can see in both videos that they do line up the same way.

2012

2018

-In 2012 we have a TE which is normal for punt protector and the receiver is uncovered. WE snapped it with 16 seconds on the play clock for a gain and huge play.
-In the 2018 video, I'm not sure how much was on the clock when we lined up and got set, but the formation is the same for both us and them. It's not until there's 9 seconds left on the play clock that their LB points and moves his counterpart over to cover up swift. We then snap the ball with 8 seconds left. It didn't look like swift was running straight and it does look like our farthest right gunner was running a post that was open.

IMO the 2 biggest problems were first and foremost putting our 2nd string mobile QB at protector. Absolutely inexcusable. Secondly why wait til 8 seconds left? If you're gonna have the balls to call that play in that moment, run in from the sideline and line up and snap it.

Fields was on the field because he is a passer by trade.

If I call a pass play from Justin Fields to Deandre Swift with man coverage by a linebacker... that is a mismatch and we should win the play.

You call it inexcusable. It is a simple toss and catch from a guy who should be pretty good at the toss.

I agree that it should have been snapped quicker. But even against coverage, it should have been a win for 11 yards.

uhh, no. If this was a regular formation then yeah sure, it was a got damn PUNT! We never lined fields up in that position on a punt all season. Bama's 5 star athletes all over the field surely would recognize (which they did..) that having our backup QB at that spot was fishy. If we put Nauta there I contend it goes without a hitch.

what? Everyone was covered because they knew it was a fake. That's why you DON'T put fields in, if he's not in we have guys running free. The 2 links above, the same play form us against the same defense of them, are picture perfect examples of what to do and not do. One worked, one didn't, and there is really only one key fundamental difference in the two..

All the route running was on the right side. They didn’t even block or Chip the end coming from the right side though, so I can’t imagine he was supposed to run back right.
