I have some Notre Dame hoosiers up here asking me if I thought "Bama has a chance"....I knew people smoked up here but now I'm wondering WHAT they are smoking! They think Tua is going to shite himself when he sees Clemson's defense.

Hoosiers would be Indiana fans, not Notre Dame fans.

Clemson’s defense hasn’t looked great in every game they’ve played. Obviously the D Line is strong, but both Jake Bentley and Kellen Mond lit them up.
Tua is clearly a class above those guys. I’ve got Bama putting up 40+ tonight.

They got their shite pushed in by Clemson. Not surprising they believe the team that beat them is super duper

Hoosiers is the name given to all the people in Indiana....it's how they are referred to...my point is simply hoosiers who are ND fans....Not all Cajuns are U of L fans either...

Indiana fans know nothing about football, and well, ND fans not much more.

You do know ND is in Indiana, and all people from Indiana are known as Hoosiers, right?

I dont think it'll be that high scoring of a game but I think Bama will still win fairly easy in a 27-13 type of game

Unlike UNC, North Carolina, and tarheels, IU has never managed to completely co-opt the name for the locals. Remember, they even named a movie about high school basketball "Hoosiers" and it wasn't a reference to where the main character went for college.

Tarheels and Vols have better marketing departments.

I honestly know essentially nothing about the historical usage of Volunteers. I mean, obviously I'm aware that it's the Volunteer State, but it never occurred to me that locals were routinely called "Volunteers" outside of the context of the university in the same way that North Carolina residents were called tarheels, so I didn't even think about Tennessee. But, then, I'm not actually from Tennessee, so my knowledge would be limited.

Tennessee was dubbed the Volunteer State because so many of the men from East Tennessee volunteered to fight for the Yankees during The War of Northern Aggression.

I know that part. The part I'm less clear on is the ubiquity of people just generically referring to Tennessee natives as "volunteers" in the same way that Indiana natives are called "hoosiers" and North Carolina natives were frequently just called "tarheels." Since Prof is more attached to the state and, well, kinda educated in a Knoxvillain (yes, intentional spelling) sense, I'm leaning toward accepting that it was actually pretty common back in the day.
