This is fair, but I don’t think he hires his son if winning is priority #1.
I can only assume that in his mind, these were not mutually exclusive.

Agree with HTDawg. The fire is gone. It was gone after the 2012 SECCG
Yea, I once had a big argument with a pro-Richt UGA fan who swore that Richt would win big down there before Kirby ever did squat here. Haven't had a chance to say 'I told ya so', though....we haven't been on speaking terms since.

I’m pretty sure he thought he could get his son some OTJT
I'm sure he did, but if you're serious about winning at the highest level, you don't hire your son who has little to no coaching experience to coach the most important position on the field. Imagine having to fire your son, which he won't do. This is one reason why we have a nepotism rule.
Their OL class is laughable. Richt still hasn't learned that great teams are built along the lines of scrimmage.

Richt coached some good QBs in his day. His Son’s uncle also was a pretty good one. I don’t think this is a big deal from a coaching standpoint. I’m sure Richt’s plan was to be invlvoled. He was at UGA more with the QBs. It’s not s huge deal other than fodder for this type thread. He won’t have to fire his Son... at worst, he moves him to a non field coaching job for a spell.

So in the bowl game, the Miami QBs accounted for 17 passes, six completions, for 48 yards. And four interceptions.
And CMR has his uniquely unqualified son as the QB coach. Yeah, this will end well.

I think it had a lot more to do with their skill level than coaching or lack of it.

Another potential cause of Richt's issues is who he hired as S&C coach. He hired Gus Felder to run his strength program after two years at UGA as an assistant in the strength program.

And he brought Thomas Brown with him to be his OC.

Yep, that was all about recruiting or familiarity because Brown was no qualified for that. I'm not sure how good he is at recruiting. So we have three coaches, the QB coach, the co-OC, and the S&C who weren't qualified. Thomas Brown is fine as the RB coach. He's not as an OC.

Wait, how are they not qualified? What do you base this on? It’s pure speculation...

It's partly speculation I admit, but I base it on their history and resume. Thomas Brown in my opinion is not qualified to be an OC. Maye one day he will be, but he's not now. As a RB coach, he's more than qualified. If I was hired to run a program like Miami I'd be hiring a proven OC that has already done it. As for Jon Richt, we know he's not qualified to be a QB coach at a power 5 program like Miami.
As for Felder, perhaps he's technically qualified but his resume pales in comparison to Soctt Sinclair's. I see nothing there that makes me think Richt should have hired him to run such an important area of the team.
Richt is paid millions to win at the highest level and these are the guys he hires at key positions? I'm not seeing it, but then maybe I'm wrong. The proof is in the pudding. Their QBs and offense are a disaster and they just got mauled by a very mediocre 7-5 Wisconsin team filled with 3 star recruits.

Thoughts on Gus? He was actually my in-laws' neighbor and my kids played with his kids often when they were here. Nice folks. Do you feel him to be unqualified for the job?

Sticking to the 'Bobby Bowden' method to the end, I'd say. And that's also one of the things that did Bobby in at FSU.
Nepotism only works on occasion when the one being hired is qualified.

I don't think he is based on what I saw of his coaching career, especially when compared to a Scott Sinclair or a Scott Cochran. Maybe that's a little unfair and that's where I'm coming from. Perhaps he is qualified at a smaller or less high profile program. He was a S&C coordinator at Clark Atlanta and Cheyney, wherever that is. It just doesn't seem like the S&C hire you would make if your interested in winning titles. Seems like Richt hired him because he was an assistant with our S&C program during Richt's last two years.
Let's be honest, what I think ultimately doesn't matter. I'm just spit balling about why Richt may not be having any success. If I'm hired at Miami, I'm not offering a RB coach with no OC experience to be my OC. I'm not hiring my son, who has no coaching experience at all, to coach QBs. I'm probably also not hiring Gus Felder based on his past coaching experience.

Even then, do you really want to put yourself in the position of firing your own son, which Richt won't ever do.
