Him fixing a few things that Richt didn't. It will take Richt's players being gone to see the flaws in Smarts coaching and development.
Funny considering Smart is bringing in better talent than Richt ever did, and doing it in the trench which Richt rarely did. If Smart almost won a championship with Richt's players, how do you think he's going to do with better players?

Georgia had an excellent season last year and did better than most expected almost winning a NC.
Was Georgia’s success last season great coaching or did they just have the right roster at the right time?
Georgia fans, how do you feel about this question?
IMO UGA should ALWAYS be in the MNC hunt. Our state puts out an average of 35 4 star players per year which is "nipping at the heels" of the big three in recruiting(Texas, Florida, and California). And who are the other in state colleges competing for these "in state" players (GA Tech, GA Southern, GA State)? Really???
A lot of these players Georgia recruits grew up Dawg fans and have lots of family members who are Dawg fans. The pressure to go play for the state school is there.
Bottom line, UGA needs to recruit its state successfully and it will win. It also needs a hard working competent head coach. Mark Richt wasn't it. I think Kirby is.
So last years success, to me, wasn't a "one off" thing. We should expect to be there.

Me thinks he's going to do just fine

Richt won the SEC and finished the regular season #3 (BCS) in his second year. They would have made the playoff had it existed then
all that is true, but it overlooks:
-we struggled that year against some pretty pedestrian teams
-we recruited around a 5-10th ranked class
-we had really solid QB/skill position players and recruits but never did all that well at the LOS. That year you mentioned had 5 senior OL, all but 1 of which were holdovers from donnan
compare that to:
-we didn't really struggle against anybody (I'm talking regular season), except for ND on the road in week 2 (a team that would be ranked in the top 5 as late as november), and on the road at AU (who would be ranked as high as #2 and we would end up whooping on rematch)
-we are recruiting 1-3 ranked classes yearly
-we are dominating OL recruiting compared to pretty much anyone in america besides alabama. And have not only maintained our good skill player recruiting but actually improved it (5* players at every single non-OL position on offense)
Richt's 02 season was wonderful, but there is a clear difference in what we're doing now compared to then.

Look at the difference in Kirby's first year and his second year. You can see that he's changing the culture. And bringing in studs at every position. It took a minute to wake everybody up from the Richt sleep walking days, but I think he's going in the right direction

Is the goal to come close to winning or to actually win?

Fair but It isn't like Kirby just made the playoff. He got about as close as possible, which I understand still doesn't count for much more.
I'm going to bet Kirby wins more than 1 SEC Championship in 14 years. That was kind of my point when bringing up how many "wasted" chances Richt had over all those years. It is a little unfair because we already know Richt's results but still think it is noteworthy.

Um neither did Kirby?
You don’t consider 3pts from a NC success? You must be pretty successful.

How many years did Richt try to get over the hump vs. Kirby?
Richt tried for 15 years. Kirby 2.

The hump doesn't just have to refer to the NC.
Okay. but to say Kirby has not done anything that Richt didn't do is wrong. Richt never played for a national Championship.
So, what do you mean when you say the hump?

Dude. You, or somebody said that Kirby has not done anything that Richt had not already done. I pointed out that Kirby played for a National Championship. Richt never did.
Georgia fans that remember will tell you I am a huge Richt fan. I made several mad when Richt was fired.
But, you would have to be blind to think Richt did a better job or equal to Kirby.

No, I don't consider LOSING the national championship getting over the hump of WINNING the national championship.
I'm an FSU fan if I counted every national championship that we have came close to winning it would diminish what it means to win a national championship. FSU couldn't get over the same hump as UGA, we were a missed fg away in 91 and 92 before winning in 1993. We didn't get over the hump until 93. UGA still isn't over the hump, I'm not saying yall won't get it this year but those things are hard as hell to win unless you are Bama and Saban is your coach.

I agree with your premise, but we are also a big land-mass state with major programs on every border. A lot of these kids are closer to FSU, AU, Clemson, USCe than Athens. And a lot of that talent is in metro ATL which is very transient. Lot's of ATL kids don't have 3 generations of Dawg fans in their family.
That said, winning makes it a lot easier!

Applying your logic, the only success is winning it all. I guess the POTUS is the only winner and the rest of us are losers.
Sound right to you? What are you successful at?

Are we not talking college football? UGA as a program has been successful, 90 percent of schools would trade programs right now. The biggest obstacle holding UGA as a program from taking it to the next level is a national championship. UGA has come close several times in the past but couldn't get it done. Kirby comes close but didn't get it done, their is still work to do. We can pretend Tua didn't make that throw in OT if you guys want

We can also pretend that the refs didn’t make the wrong call, which was clearly proven wrong on the replay, on the punt that UGA blocked that would have sealed the game. If that call had not been blown, not many would know who Tus was, and we would not be having this conversation.
It takes some intelligence to realize that, when a NC is played that closely, either team could have won. It’s pretty apparent that Kirby built something in a very short period of time that rivaled what Saban had.
You can banter all you want, but Kirby has done an outstanding job both on and off the field in his short tenure at UGA. And all indications are that he’s only going to get better.
Sorry for whatever team you pull for.
