I talked to a teenager recently that had never heard of Napster. Napster is probably the beginning of the modern internet, it and the case surrounding it were one of the biggest things that helped shape what the internet as we know it today is and how we use it. That's the kind of thing that should be getting added into history text books.

No doubt. The music industry lost that battle big time. It still makes you wonder how much someone like Taylor Swift is making off things like iHeart radio and Youtube. You know musicians lost toooons of money on Napster. I bet Taylor does get a decent youtube cut, though.
On the other hand movie piracy battles trickled down to internet providers who will enforce it.
Remember when Napster shut down and everyone just started using Limewire? lol.

I actually remember using Kazaa first and then switching to Limewire. Used Limewire all through HS until briefly switching to bit torrents before everybody stopped actually downloading music and just started streaming.

I’d argue it was the beginning of an era of the internet that’s already died and gone. Not sure what I’d say was the beginning of what I’d call the modern internet, maybe the advent of iTunes and/or Apps & mobile centric.

You laugh about Limewire.
True story. I was in on the ground floor when Napster started. I had a separate computer in my home office for nothing but downloading music. That thing would run 24 hours a day. I was scared that they would pull the plug on digital music downloaded completely.
I would download everything. I can still remember what the first interface looked like. At times, it would take 1 hour to download one damn song.
I have a hard drive (with backup) that has over 25,000 songs on it.

I never used bearshare but after seeing the logo I do remember it. If I recall, it seemed kind of like a janky cheap version of limewire

By the time I was in HS dowbload speeds on limewire for a single song had gotten fairly quick, I don't remember exactly how many songs i had, but it was may more than that. I had damb near filled up a 160gb iPod classic. If I would have pressed play on my entire library, i think it said it would have taken nearly a year to play it all

I did the same. Never used Napster though for some reason. Limewire, Kazaa, others. And yeah slow as hell and Russian roulette on a virus. The early days of Bit Torrent was the absolute golden age of file sharing imo. Oinks Pink Palace was >*.

I was just too young mostly. But I remember watching my dad use Napster and requesting certain songs for him to download. When I started with Kazaa by myself I was 11 or 12, I think.
