Moving to Nashville - Areas to look?

So my job is going to be moving me to Nashville within the next year or so. Good lord, the housing market up there is ridiculous.
My wife and I are both 32 with 2 kids both under 2 years old, so schools will be important. I do not want to/can't pay for private.
I would rather not be north of town as she has some family land in Columbia that I'd like to be able to get to pretty quickly need be. I've looked at housing in Franklin and Brentwood, and frankly, I don't know that we can swing it for what we want. We're in a house now that is what I would consider "nice," but if you transplanted it to either Brentwood or Franklin it would be double the price.
I'm just looking for some guidance from anyone familiar with the area. Any input will be greatly appreciated as I'm a little overwhelmed. We're tired of moving around, and this will be a long stay barring catastrophe, so I want to make the right choice.
ETA: I'm not opposed to being in Nashville metro; I just don't know enough about it to know which areas to steer clear of. Budget is likely around 350-400k.

Lol good luck finding a 350-400 K house in Belle Meade
West Nashville/Bellevue would be the best place to start...probably would want to look into private schools though
North (Antioch, Goodlettsville) and East Nashville are rough
Smyrna/Lavergne...also pretty rough down there but cheaper
Bentwood/Franklin have the best schools, but like you said its going to be more expensive out there
Nashville housing market is rough, im leaving work but i can expand on this later

Mt. Juliet / Wilson County -- the traffic is a nightmare though.

You don't need to. It's suburban Nashville, not Baton Rouge.
Go just a little further south from Franklin to Spring Hill or Thompson's Station.

You cannot have children attend Davidson/ metro public schools.... you need to look in franklin Thompson station Columbia or nolensville

I’m in a tough spot because my office will likely be downtown and I don’t want to commute 3 hours a day. I’d like to see my kids in the evening. Granted, I’ll have some flexibility running said office but I’d still like to be accessible to a degree. Nolensville is appealing but I’ve been told by a few that there’s just nothing there and it’s a ways out.

Belle Meade is where the rich folks live, old money
You need to be looking in Green Hills, Franklin or Brentwood
If that is too expensive, look at Galliton, Hendersonville and Mt Juliet are worth looking at if you don't mind living a little further out

I started to say West Nashville was bad, but meant East Nashville, W Nashville is fine, but schools are just so-so
You need to find a way to be in Green Hills or West Meade (the poor part of Belle Meade) if you can
If you can swing something in Brentwood or Franklin, that's the next best choice (schools are awesome, some of the best in the country)
Traffic in Nashville is almost as bad as Atlanta
If you have to, look at houses around Vandy and deal with the cost of private school, you DO NOT want your kids in Davidson County schools

My wife is a realtor here. (Sorry no pics) Anywhere South off 65, 840, or southeast off 24 towards Murfreesboro are your best options. Can jump on 840 to head to Columbia quickly.

Good luck, Nashville is a tough market to find an affordable house combined with good schools. If you can find someplace a bit cheaper in a vaguely decent area I'd suggest going private school if you can.
Working downtown in Nashville is going to complicate things a lot for you I'm afraid.
