But you did waste the time to put up an inane shot of a something or other grinning like a possum. Somehow I get a feeling that anyone who admires a goober like that is not likely to have been an ex-marine. Not saying you are a limp wrist at all. You are perhaps very light hearted and talented. With very little to do. But I may be wrong.

Okay, that was good.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Smart and Pruitt don't have to roll over for Nick Saban, even if Bama fans want them to.
The whole Bama fan idea that they should keep Bama's interests in mind is bizarre.

That’s a lot of words. Can I get a sentence or two summary?

There was more to the story than that. The Commish gave the kid a waiver to transfer within the SEC, an action that Alabama wasn't in favor of.
He made it clear that he wanted to go to Georgia. Why was Saban have a problem with it? Like I said. It comes off as petty. We obviously were not a threat to Alabama that year, and with all the talent Alabama has stockpiled, it didn't hurt Alabama. At all.
It comes off as vindictive, like I said.

it'll bite other schools in the arse...and it will.
I remember Alabama fans on here predicting the apocalypse when it happened and was telling us all that Saban was going to take all of our players. I said that was dumb at the time and I still say it. Alabama has a system, and a pipeline. They aren't going to start raiding rosters.

Smith was in line to be a solid contributor on the defense before he left, not some bench warmer - and Alabama's dbs did quite well in the draft so there is some merit to that commentary even though it is likely just meant to rile you up.
The whole situation was dragged around in the media and they had to waive a standing rule to allow it to happen. Its pretty easy to see how players jumping to another team in the same conference like that can potentially get ugly moving forward.

I'm not sure, and I'm not reading this entire thread to find out, but I don't think the rule applies to grad transfers. I could be wrong tho.

I think Alabama waived it on Smith voluntarily
It is my understanding that Bama was against this transfer and tried to block it but the SEC intervened.
Again, I could be wrong.
I completely understand Alabama's position, especially with a quality depth player like Kennedy going to a rival school (Auburn or Tennessee), but he's a Grad transfer and shouldn't be blocked from any school, imo.

Georgia is just now reaching a level where there is some talent depth, and once that level is achieved, then you'll see the results. Instead of a kid transferring to a different conference to play, you'll see him lining up against you in games, using the development and training (and inside info)he received from your team against you.

Pretty simple. Like Kirby & UGA a couple of years ago, Jeremy & UT are happily taking Nick's sloppy seconds. For some odd reason, that has Jim all bent out of shape.

If they were regular players, I would agree. But there just aren't that many GT's. I mean, can you name one other graduate transfer that has transferred between SEC teams since this happened? There may be on, but none of note that I know of.

IIRC, the SEC waived their part of the objection to Smith going to UGA, and that was what Saban was relying on for the block. Instead of looking petty, and at the urging of the SEC, he reluctantly okayed the transfer.
Kudos to Saban for doing the right thing. As it turned out, it made UGA and Smith happy, and di not hurt Alabama. Wins all around.

Graduate Transfers. And nobody has butterfli(y)ed around the league.
quote:Again, it affected nothing but graduate transfers. I can think on no other GT's transferring within the conference since then. if they have, they certainly have not been anyone that heavily contributed.

Once again,we're talking about GRADUATE TRANSFERS.It's
not as though there are 5 or 6 a year plus these kids have graduated. He should be able to go anywhere the hell he wants to on scholarship. You really wanna go to
court over this?
CMR let kids (non graduates) leave the program and go wherever they wanted including GT and AU which wasn't a good idea.

Worth noting is that the Burrow qb LSU fans want is a grad transfer and Urban won't give clearance to another Big10 School (at least I read that). So the issue is clearly a national thing and not an SEC thing.
This may be why we don't see in-conference transfer examples often as most coaches won't agree to it. That is just pure speculation and i'm certainly not an expert on what all goes on in this process.

It doesn't matter when he committed he committed his amateur status to that school. I believe he can transfer without restriction if the school he attends doesn't offer he graduate studies. Otherwise he is free to transfer outside the conference without sitting a year. He can transfer within the SEC if the coach/AD OK's it.
Smith did graduate and was set to go to Miami. He changed his mind and was set to go to Baylor then then the shite hit the fan. Meanwhile Kirby who recruited and coached him got the job at Georgia and recruited him over to UGA. Smith's situation was never abut school it was about playing time. It was also about Kirby poaching a valuable player that we needed that year.
