When I was young and dumb, I ate steaks medium-well. I learned that rare is the way to go. Much better flavor.

Always been medium-rare for me. As flavorful as rare without being dang-near raw inside. I was lucky growing up -- all the steak you can eat. My stepfather had a big cattle farm.
