Thompson 31, Hoover 28: Alabama QB commit Taulia Tagovailoa leads game-winning drive

Thompson quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa directed two scoring drives late in the fourth quarter Friday night in a 31-28 victory over Hoover in the Class 7A semifinals.

The Alabama commitment led an 85-yard drive that ended with Shadrick Byrd's 3-yard plunge into the end zone with 21 seconds remaining. On the previous possession, Tagovailoa threw a 56-yard touchdown pass on fourth down near midfield.

Hoover led 28-17 after the Bucs blocked a Thompson punt and returned it for a score near the end of this third quarter. Tagovailoa's 56-yard strike to AJ Bonham with 5:55 to go pulled the Warriors to 28-23. After stopping the Bucs on the ensuing possession, Thompson took over at its own 15-yard line with all three timeouts remaining.
