Follow up on King. He's just there to have fun with teammates. Both he and AU staff like and respect each other. They don't have a problem with him visiting despite knowing he's solid to Bama

That's pretty much the same situation with Nolan Smith, who's 100% committed to UGA, but still visits Bama some. Smith likes and has a lot of respect for Lupoi and Saban and enjoys visiting Bama. He's visiting this weekend with fellow teammates from IMG.

Alabama makes Georgia DB's top 5

quote:

Alabama, along with Clemson, Oklahoma, Southern California, and Tennessee make up three-star safety Jalyn Phillips' top five, the Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer product announced on Saturday.

"Having a good relationship with all the coaches," Phillips told BamaOnLine as to why the Tide made the cut. "Just seeing the way they grind every year to make it to a championship is amazing. Ans they're known for sending DBs to the league and I’ll have the man himself (Nick Saban) coaching me at DB."

Phillips visited Tuscaloosa earlier this year for Junior Day and plans to be back on campus sometime this month, although he has not yet set a date.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder also set a commitment date of August 20, his birthday.

The narrowing of his list to five is significant considering Phillips boast of 50 offers to his name.

Clemson leads the 247Sports Crystal Ball for Phillips. Two of his teammates at Archer in five-star cornerback Andrew Booth and three-star defensive end Colby Wooden are also big Tigers targets.

At 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, Phillips is rated the No. 31 safety and the No. 400 overall player in the country, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. 247Sports is a bit higher on Phillips rating him the No. 27 safety and the No. 373 overall player in the country.

The Tide has targeted several defensive backs in the 2019 class. It currently has a pair committed in the secondary in four-star cornerback Christian Williams and four-star athlete Brandon Turnage.

Phillips, along with five-star safety Daxton Hill, four-star safeties (recruited as cornerbacks) Noa Pola-Gates and Jarrian Jones, four-star corners Tyrique Stevenson and Jeffery Carter are just some of the other names to know in the secondary as it stands.

With camp season kicking off this weekend, expect the defensive backs board to shuffle even more as Nick Saban and staff get their eyes on different prospects that make their way through Tuscaloosa.

Here's an evaluation of Phillips' strength's from 247Sports' Mike Roach last year:

"Phillips has an impressive frame with good length and room to add more bulk. He plays mostly as an in-the-box safety with responsibilities as a nickel back and blitzing linebacker. Phillips has good straight-line explosion and burst, and he uses his hands well. His length is a weapon when used against blockers and disrupting passing lanes. Phillips is a sound tackler, and he plays with good physical ability. Phillips shows good lateral ability, and his fluid hips will allow him a chance to stick at the safety position. Phillips shows good quickness and lateral agility, and he’s not shy about taking on players at the point of attack"

Cousin of title game hero could be latest Alabama recruiting steal

quote:

Unlike the other cornerback that committed to Alabama on national signing day, Eddie Smith's announcement wasn't shown on national television and Twitter didn't explode once he made his commitment.

But Alabama likes the potential of this under-the-radar defensive back from Slidell, Louisiana.

Smith, a cousin of Crimson Tide national title game hero DeVonta Smith, felt like he should have been ranked higher than a three-star recruit. So did Alabama.

"When coach Saban came to my house, after watching my film, he said he was shocked that I was only a three-star and was shocked that I didn't have more offers than what I had," Smith said, "... He said he knows a lot about football and said he really liked my film and didn't understand why I was so underrated. He feels like I can do big things for Bama."

A former soccer player, Smith didn't focus solely on football until after his sophomore year of high school and didn't have many, if any, offers until early last year.

Smith committed to TCU last June but decommitted in December and ultimately chose the Tide over Mississippi State and Tennessee.

In all, Alabama signed five defensive backs in this year's recruiting class, including the two that committed on national signing day -- Smith and five-star Florida native Patrick Surtain.

One of the newcomers, JUCO transfer Saivion Smith, ended the spring as a first-team cornerback. Now, Surtain, Smith and the others will join the competition for spots on the two-deep for the Tide, which lost its top six defensive backs from last year.

Alabama coaches think the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Smith is capable of playing both cornerback and safety.

"They think he's versatile," said Smith's father, Eddie. "They liked his height. They liked his hips. They liked his speed. They just liked him (overall)."

Soon, Smith will have to cover his cousin, who helped prepare him for Alabama.

The two talked almost every day the past few months leading up to Eddie arriving in Tuscaloosa on Sunday.

DeVonta has told Eddie to expect a lot of running during summer workouts, which is why Eddie had been regularly running a mile after completing his normal workouts.

DeVonta has also shared other advice.

"He's told me that if I come work hard enough I can get that spot," Eddie said. "That's what he's been telling me. I wanted to be around somebody that I knew would push me. And I know, him being family, that he'll push me."

I really think Smith could end up being the best DB we signed last year, Surtain included.

A couple of offers out today to a pair of 2020 prospects in 4-star OLB Mekhail Sherman and 4-star WR Rakim Jarrett, both from St. John's College in Washington D.C.

ETA: We apparently offered another 2020 kid from St. John's College that isn't listed and a 2019 Safety today as well. They must be fricking stacked.

I'll start posting profiles and film in just a second.

So now that the new offers from St. John's are out of the way, lets discuss the player from there we had already offered, 2019 4-star RB Keilan Robinson.

Hank South said this about him a few hours ago:

quote:

I wrote the other night that Bama might have an inside track for Robinson at the moment if the staff decides to make a push.
