Inside linebacker a top priority for Alabama after disappointing 2018 class

Christian Harris is one of Bama's top ILB targets.
quote:

Alabama wrapped up its 2018 recruiting class with 19 signees, which was the seventh-ranked class in the country and second-best in the SEC, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Full attention now turns to the 2019 class. Over the next two weeks, SEC Country will look at each position group on for the Class of 2019.

Here is a look at inside linebackers.

The breakdown: Alabama whiffed at inside linebacker recruiting in the 2018 class. The Crimson Tide wanted JJ Peterson, but once Jeremy Pruitt left for Tennessee, that was a done deal. The Tide also liked Vernon Jackson, but it came apparent that he wasn’t going to sign with Alabama, so the staff stopped recruiting him. The team also liked Brandon Kaho, but he surprisingly signed with Washington.

Bama did sign 3-star inside linebacker Jaylen Moody, who surely was a backup plan for the team. He got offered in the final days leading up to National Signing Day. He’ll likely redshirt this season.

Getting ILBs this class is of the utmost importance. Dylan Moses and Mack Wilson are likely the starters heading into this season. Moses showed that he’s bound for stardom while Wilson has shown that he’s likely the next Tide linebacker who’s going to get selected early in the NFL draft. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him leave after this season. Outside of Moses and Wilson, there are lots of unknowns. Ben Davis hasn’t developed the way we thought he would coming out of high school and Markail Benton hasn’t played yet.

As for the Class of 2019, Nakobe Dean is a major target. He’s very interested in Alabama and has made several visits to Tuscaloosa. He’s from Mississippi, so there’s going to be that pressure on him to play for Ole Miss or Mississippi State. He did tell SEC Country that Alabama and LSU were two schools that would surely make his top 5.

Christian Harris is also a top priority for the Tide. The Louisiana athlete listed Alabama as his leader a few weeks ago, but then he got offered by LSU and Florida State, two of his dream schools. It caused him to pause on listing Alabama as his leader, but the Tide are still in good shape.

Vonta Bentley attends Jackson-Olin High School in Birmingham, which has sent two players to Auburn (TD Moultry and Coynis Miller) in the past two classes. Bentley has listed Alabama as his leader, though.

Alabama seems to always sign at least one junior college prospect in every class. Lakia Henry is considered the top option right now.

The good news for the Tide when it comes to inside linebackers this year is that there are several of them who are already high on the Tide. I don’t think Bama will strike out this cycle.

Auburn recruiting question of the day: Best-case 2019 commitments by position

quote:

As I referenced in my Auburn recruiting Facebook Live chat, most of the Tigers’ top targets are taking their time with their decisions.

Five-star linebacker Owen Pappoe would like to make a decision by May, if possible. Other than that, there have been a lot of “before my senior year responses” and even more “no timeline” for decisions.

This has been the trend the last couple recruiting cycles, as Auburn — and some of its SEC counterparts — has done most of its damage in the summer and fall. The spring has been more about laying the foundation. Auburn has two commitments, from quarterback Bo Nix and wide receiver George Pickens, and the Tigers are poised to build on that high-caliber start.

Auburn is in competitive position for many of its top targets. The decision processes might be in the early stages, but the Tigers are at or near the top for many of them. Here’s a look at the best-case scenarios for Auburn at each position in the 2019 class.

I'll post the ones relevant to us.

Interior offensive line: 5-star Clay Webb, Oxford, Ala.

Clay Webb is the highest-ranked interior offensive lineman in the country. He’s as familiar with Auburn as any other program in the country.

Webb considered this an Auburn-Alabama recruiting battle from the beginning. In recent months, he has opened up to the possibility of Georgia and Tennessee. But I expect his decision will come down the Tigers and Crimson Tide.

Alabama is the runaway favorite for Webb, in large part because of his friendship with Crimson Tide offensive line commit Pierce Quick. Auburn will hope his relationship with Tigers quarterback commit Bo Nix has a similar effect.

Second choice: 4-star Keiondre Jones, Hogansville, Ga.

Defensive line: 4-star Nathan Pickering, Seminary, Miss.

Nathan Pickering didn’t end up making his second Auburn visit last weekend, as expected, but the Tigers have him on the docket for the weekend of March 24.

Pickering’s return plans to the Plains show how interested he is in the Tigers. He has taken several college visits this spring, but he continues to say how much the Auburn visit stood out. Pickering will be courted by anyone and everyone, including Alabama, Georgia, LSU and his in-state schools, so this won’t be an easy recruiting win in Mississippi.

Auburn hopes new assistant coach Marcus Woodson’s ties to the state will be the difference maker.

Second choice: 4-star Justin Eboigbe, Forest Park, Ga.

Everybody thinks they are landing Pickering.

Linebacker: 5-star Owen Pappoe, Loganville, Ga.

Owen Pappoe probably is the best-case commitment Auburn could land — regardless of position.

The No. 7 overall prospect in the nation plays a position that is losing three seniors from the 2018 Auburn roster. He comes from a high school known to be a college football pipeline, so it would generate a recruiting ripple effect for the Tigers at Grayson High School and the metro Atlanta area.

The truth: It won’t be easy to beat Georgia for Pappoe. He admitted as much Sunday. But prospects such as Pappoe are worth the effort, especially when he said Travis Williams is his strongest recruit-coach relationship.

Second choice: 5-star Nakobe Dean, Horn Lake, Miss.

Cornerback: 4-star Christian Williams, Daphne, Ala.

Auburn missed on many of its top 2018 cornerback targets. The Tigers will try to correct that in 2019.

Christian Williams will be a classic Iron Bowl recruiting battle, much like the Jalyn Armour-Davis contest won by the Crimson Tide last cycle. Williams grew up an Alabama fan in an Alabama household, so the common belief is he’ll end up with the Crimson Tide. Auburn won’t go away quietly, though.

Williams made one of his first recruiting trips to Auburn this spring. He and his family had a full weekend of 1-on-1 time with Tigers coaches. Williams suggested his Alabama fandom won’t affect his decision, though the Crimson Tide’s cornerbacks-to-the-NFL track record might be enough.

Second choice: 4-star Kaiir Elam, North Palm Beach, Fla.

Safety: 4-star Jaylen McCollough, Powder Springs, Ga.

Auburn recruiting is at its best when it has prospects on campus separately, so the Tigers can devote personalized time to a specific player.

That’s what happened with 4-star prospect Jaylen McCollough in February, and it shot the Tigers up his leaderboard. McCollough was able to sit down with defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and defensive backs coach Greg Brown to watch film and understand his fit in Auburn’s defense.

McCollough will be heavily recruited by all the top programs in the Southeast, but the Tigers made a major impression early.

Second choice: 4-star Cortez Andrews, Tallahassee, Fla.

Do we want to take the JUCO kid if he's just going to be a project? We're dangerously thin and we can't afford to take a risk on guys that won't end up contributing (like Jamar King). I'd rather take Sterling Johnson or the DT from Rice.

1) Who says the Juco player is a risky project?

2) What indicates Johnson or the Rice guy can be effective against SEC OLs? Are they better players than Jamar King?

3) The DL depth issue is more at NT than at DEs. So, maybe the All American Juco guy is a better choice than the other two guys.

4) Saban and the staff are way more qualified than we are to decide who to add to the roster.

If Ben Davis can't get into the mix at ILB at Bama this spring then I doubt he will ever play a meaningful down at Bama.

Alabama reaffirms offer to Mississippi DB (BamaOnLine)
quote:

After picking up an offer from the Crimson Tide during an unofficial visit for the LSU game back in November, new UA inside linebackers coach Pete Golding reaffirmed the news to 3-star safety  Jarrian Jones on Tuesday night.

"I'm very excited. It's a blessing," Jones told BamaOnLine.

3-star DB Jarrian Jones says Alabama re-offered on Tuesday night.

Despite being rated as a safety, the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder says it's corner that Alabama likes him at. Jones says he and head coach Nick Saban are expected to talk on the phone Wednesday.

"Just the environment," Jones said of what he likes about UA. "It's Alabama, so you know it's a great environment. They are strictly about business."

The Flowood (MS) Northwest Rankin product visited LSU last weekend, after which he named the Tigers his leader. He says that remains the case despite Alabama coming back into the picture because he hasn't had a chance to meet the new defensive staff in person yet.

Jones is rated the No. 36 safety and the No. 499 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball currently favors Mississippi State at 67 percent.

I don't know about the risky of jucos but I guess I just like Johnson. He made more of an impact stat wise for Clemson (Had 14 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and a quarterback pressure in 129 snaps over 11 games) behind a deeper Dline than King did here (according to rolltide.com he had a handful of tackles and a couple of pressures over 8 games). I know he hasn't played in the SEC but I think being in the ACC and going up against Clemson's Oline in practice is solid. I don't believe the SEC has some outer worldly level of Oline play. I think Kool was looking at him for Miami before he left for us and we recruited him out HS. He still has 2 years to play if I'm not mistaken. I think he would workout well for us working with Kool and be worth the scholly. I honestly believe he is a better option thank King or Kendrick and worth it considering we will still have 25 schollys. Still with that being said there really isn't any evidence we are after him.

@ Carlton

Valid points. Tho, without some research I don't know if those stats were achieved via playing time mainly against cupcake opponents. How many snaps did Jamar King play?

The only think I've seen is that Lupoi has talked some initially to Sterling Johnson.

Per Hank South (BOL) Tevita Musika is supposed to visit within the next couple weeks.

Bama makes 4-star WR's top schools list (BamaOnLine)

quote:

A little over a month after offering, Alabama made the top 10 list for Marcus Washington, the St. Louis (Mo.) Parkway North product announced on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.

Along with the Crimson Tide, Florida State, Iowa State, Missouri, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Texas, and USC made the cut in no specific order.

New Tide defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski, who spent over a decade at Missouri, recruits Washington for the Tide.

At 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, Washington is rated the No. 10 WR and No. 61 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Alabama recruiting question of the day: Which top receiver is most likely to sign with Tide?

Devonta Lee is one of Bama's top WR targets.
quote:

Alabama finished 7th in the recruiting rankings in the 2018 class, but expect the Crimson Tide to be back on top in 2019. SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner will answer the Recruiting Question of the Day each weekday. You can ask him your questions on  Twitter or Facebook. You can find our previous questions and answers  here.

Chris Waldrep @smurf871112
If you were putting money on one of the top receivers to sign, who would it be?

Of the top 10 receivers ranked by the 247Sports composite, I think the likeliest to sign with Alabama is 4-star prospect Devonta Lee from Amite (La.) High School.

Lee picked up an offer from the Tide last month. It was an offer he was waiting on since he became a national recruit more than a year ago. Lee is a former teammate of DeVonta Smith, whom he considers a big brother.

Lee visited Tuscaloosa numerous times in the last few years as Smith was going through the recruiting process and after he signed with the Tide. Alabama assistant director of player personnel Sam Petitto began his coaching career at Amite High School and is still close to that community.

I think Lee’s recruitment is going to come down to Alabama and LSU. I don’t think the Tigers are going to have a dynamic offense this season, while the Tide’s offense might be more explosive than it has been in recent memory with Tua Tagovailoa behind center.

Alabama’s wide receiver class is going to be small in 2019, but Lee is near the top of the board.
