UK with basketball and Vandy with Academics contribute much more to the conference than useless schools like Arkansas, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, USCe, Auburn etc
Yeah..we are totally useless..

Academically we seem pretty futile as well...

The most important SEC program is clearly Missouri as they prove Meth can be produced outside of Florida.

They haven't won a natty in one of the 3 major sports in 3 decades. Please explain.

The SEC didn't become the most powerful conference because of just one team. Obviously, our league has a quality that none of the others possess. That quality is camaradie. While we are fanatical about our individual schools, we also support our fellow institutions. This has resulted in a common shield against all comers who would denigrate our perceived culture.

Ok, but that's not what you said

Without the wildcats, we are a pathetic group of rejects in a major men’s sport.
In the last 12 seasons, UF has won 2 national titles, been in 3 Final Fours and 7 Elite Eights. We aren't a blue blood and don't have some illustrious basketball history, but UF is certainly one of the top programs in college basketball over the last 25 years.

Vandy is the most important member. This is understood by all people who make a practice of understanding such things. Best academics, best endowment (we don't have to share with other state schools like TAMU does), and best grungy coffee houses filled with rich kids trying to pretend they're poor. We give the SEC that undefinable edge that so many conferences desperately desire.

Not sure as all are important in their own way, but consider the following:
#1 Kentucky gave us Dr Dudley - Dr Dudley would wind up at Vanderbilt where he would create both the SIAA ( precursor of the SEC) and the NCAA.
#2 Kentucky is the buffer state to the Ohio Ocean and yankee invaders
#3 Basketball, they are the top college program in the nation.
#4 Rife, aside from the Natty, keeps yankees at bay
#5 Bourbon, seriously tho, this might need to be #1
#6 Fast women
#7 Beautiful horses
#8 Rustling the Mizzou jimmies?
#9 When SEC founded UK's president was the first leader.

I like basketball, and it's definitely a major sport. However, at any school that plays any semblance of big time college football, football is exponentially more important financially than every other sport.
The most recent filings I could find (through mid 2015) Kentucky made $24.68 million in basketball revenue. In that same time frame, Kentucky, who hasn't won a bowl in a decade or so, made $35.49 million in football revenue. LINK

If your only talking about basketball ball then yes. As sports program they are not even close to Florida . Kentucky is the top dog in basket ball but UF is the second best basketball program.

Yes and No
First of all it is more linear than exponential
Second, the basketball numbers are skewed because of the NCAA
NCAA skims over 1 billion off the top every year in basketball so basketball schools revenue numbers are seriously understated. Because CFB pays no money to the NCAA they have more to split among themselves.
Viewed another way Kentucky basketball = .25 Alabama football on say a game by game basis. However the basketball program at Kentucky might play 4 or 5 times the number of home games as Alabama does in football so you have to recalculate on a total numbers as opposed individual games. Also, accounting differences by school means biggest may not reflect reality. I think UK Athletics gives about 10 million a year to UK academics and seems like almost all of it comes out of the basketball budget.

Would have to say Florida. They routinely contend for championships in softball, baseball, swimming, track, etc..

Hyperbole on the "exponentially" comment
I know this, but the OP is talking about the conference. It doesn't matter to the conference how much the NCAA makes.
What differences would make up an about $10 million difference at Kentucky in football and basketball revenue?
There's a reason the original Big East fell apart and a reason Temple and UConn choose to be in the American over the modern Big East. We're talking about basketball powerhouses who left a great, maybe the best, college basketball conference just to ensure they didn't miss out on the exploding amount of football money.

This is not just a financial discussion.
Its also about prestige and history.
Several posters have made good arguments about florida, even though they are "new money". They have good potential going forward.
I just don't know what the conference would hang our hat on in the basketball world, if the wildcats left the conference.

You do realize the NCAA has running credits (out about 7 years) for appearances which filters down to all conference members. Also, with multiple football teams the value of an individual school is lessened. If you have a single basketball it value is greater.
Also, it does matter to the conference as if the P5's break away as has often been discussed in these realignment scenarios that value currently siphoned off by the NCAA would greatly affect SEC's media values. Basketball schools overnight would be valued in Top 25 for revenue streams.

If Kentucky were in the ACC they would not be "Kentucky" because they'd be sharing a conference with:
Syracuse
North Carolina
Duke
Louisville
Virginia.
Being in the SEC has made Kentucky what they are. If they were in the ACC and only winning their conference once or twice a decade they'd have a difference perception.
Much like kansas' dominance of the B12. Put them in the ACC, Pac or even the SEC for that matter with Kentucky and they are't the same team.
Don't mishear me, Kentucky is a Blue Blood in basketball and good for the league, but the league is equally as good for Kentucky.

If they had been in the ACC first they would have been the dominant school from the start. High school basketball is insane in the triangle (KY - IN - OH) and has been since the early days of college basketball.
The original school in the ACC was NC State and the coach that made them a force was Indiana's old coach.
Virginia is not a basketball school
Syracuse seems to be a 1 coach school
Duke seems to be a 1 coach school
Louisville would never bi in the ACC if Kentucky was there first
You sound young to not understand how much the ACC sucked in basketball before ESPN. Stall Ball played at UNC was painful to watch.
