Bama: Rushing Leaders

With their abundance of talented running backs, isn’t it odd that Hurts leads the team with 85 rushing attempts. Harris averages 8.5 ypc but averages less than 10 carries per game. Any theories on this? I know RPO has changed college football, but this seems odd. Is Bama trying to prepare Hurts to possibly become an NFL qb or are they doing what Meyer did to Tebow...using his athleticism and not giving a crap about his development as a qb

They're trying to win games...
Hurts running helps them do that.

Harris was a non event last night. Hurts scrambles is Bamas run offense

Maybe that’s why UGA hasn’t won anything in almost 40 years?
Saban’s job is not to prepare QBs for the NFL.
I am happy with Saban’s philosophy.

No- I think it's stupid he doesn't get more carries. Bo isn't the same to me as he was in the last stretch of games last year. Harris has deceptive speed and power, with great vision. It kills me we never truly commit to the run with him.

LSU payed a lot in the box, stopped the run for one night. Hurts Hurt them in the air some and scrabbled some.
You understand this is just one game, right?

Stop bringing logic and an understanding of college football into this discussion ;p

That's the m.o. vs Alabama. Stop the run and put pressure on Hurts and see if he can beat you with the pass.

Too much logic.
Off topic. Hope we meet for the SECCG. Love what Smart has done.

Their RBs were a combined 22 for 75 against LSU last night.

LSU played a straight up 3-4 most of the night. Nickel in obvious passing situations.

A good chunk of Hurts' rushes are scrambles and sacks. Just off the top of my head it seems that his usage in the designed run game has decreased over the course of the season.
I couldn't tell you why Harris isn't getting more carries. Part of his season numbers being so low is just that we usually have backups in early in the 3rd. But even against FSU and LSU he only got 9 carries each.

It’s not Harris it’s the OL. They have struggled against the 3 best DL they have faced this year in FSU, A&M, and LSU. Harris had to break 2 tackles to just get 2-3 yards. The OL is probably the weakest and most disappointing part of the entire team this year.

This isn’t a bash Bama thread. I went to Birmingham Southern and am a Bama fan when they don’t play UGA.
And my point wasn’t based on last night. It’s the entire season. Bama st their best is a smash mouth, run it down your throat team. You know it’s coming, good luck stoping it. My question is why the deviation in philosophy? Is the OL not as dominant?

Alabama hasn't had that philosophy since 2015.
Alabama's run game is more spread rush to the edge.

My point wasn’t about last night...these stats are for the entire year. Same with last year

Bama is not an NFL prep school. Nick Saban doesnt recruit people because he can develop them into an NFL talent. His purpose in recruiting and coaching is to win at Bama.
They have multiple running backs that rotate in and out of the game.
The main reason Hurts has more carries is, he touches the ball on every snap, hes an efficient runner and he will take off if the defense leaves a big enough gap.
TL/DR Saban develops championship teams not NFL players.
