You guys claiming Michel wasn't wide open are either blind or crazy. He was wide open and would have walked into the endzone. Fromm never looked at him because he is too locked in on his first receiver and doesn't go through his progressions enough.
No one is saying he wasn't open, but I have pointed out why he was open.
He didn't look at Sony because he expected to have the first option open on the ten yard line, and in order for that pass to connect, he had to throw it with certain timing that didn't allow for a throw to the 2nd option.

He did come forward, but when you are far back like he was, how far you can come is limited. If he was in position to defend that pass, he would not have had to dive forward to the ground just to get to the ball at the 4 yard line as he did.
Yeah, after another look I saw where he broke forward and to his left. That took him out of the play. It was all he could do to get back to make a close pick. he couldn't have covered Nauta.

If you look closely, this guy was facing Sony, thus would not have been in position to defend the pass where the route was heading. He have been left in the dust due to being distracted by Son
It looks like he was backpedaling to me.
However, what is the point? bad read, or bad throw, or what? I'm not sure.

then he should have gone to Sony. No way the LB was going to make up that much ground on somebody with Sony's speed. There is no way he could make up that much ground on Sony whether he runs into Nauta or not.
It wasn't a lot of ground until he was blocked. Lbs often have the rb covered out of the backfield. It's routine.

2. Fromm delivered the ball in roughly 1.83 seconds. Hardly enough time to go through any progressions when the primary target is supposed to catch the ball 10-15 yards downfield.
3. Nauta was the primary target on the play and there was an open space where Nauta was running to. Quickish strike + potentially open receiver = throw the ball

The LB was too far inside to cover a wheel route. I don't know what to tell you. Almost every time a LB tires to cover a RB running a wheel route it is going for huge yards. Add to that Sony's speed....the LB had no chance whether he got tripped u or not.

this is true. but when he saw his primary covered he should have then gone through his progressions and he would have seen Michel easily open. If you primary is open you don't go through progressions. You go through progressions when your primary is covered, and Nauta had a LB on him tight.

He was, and then he turned his hips towards Sony.

Ok. So what is the argument about? That Fromm made a bad read? Or made a bad throw? Or what? Or does anybody remember?

At the very least, he would not have appeared wide open without the unplanned contact. If its not wide open, no one complains about the play at all.

True. But he was wide open. So.....

Real-Time Play
Here is how the play worked out from my vantage point:
Key:
1: Nauta
2: Michel
3: TN LB
4: TN LB
5: TN CB
Football is circled
This is immediately after the snap. Nauta (1) runs straight ahead while Michel (2) is starting his wheel route to the left sideline. After a stutter to his left, LB3 starts following LB4 to their right while CB5 is standing still, defending Nauta.
Fromm has started his delivery at this point as Nauta begins making contact with LB4. LB3 is still a few yards away and CB5 is still backpedaling to stay with Nauta's route. Michel has just gotten open underneath, but Fromm has started his motion already.
Fromm has released the ball a few miliseconds earlier and Nauta is starting to fall down. LB4 has run past Nauta and is chasing after a streaking Michel. LB3's trajectory appears to be after Michel, as well. CB5 is still backpedaling as Nauta falls down.
Nauta is down and the ball hits the ground right in front of the safety. Michel is still heading down the sideline to no avail but LB3 and LB4 appear to be pursuing him. CB5 is now full on trying to head toward the the ball.

quote:As you can probably see in the pictures above, Nauta was covered for that brief second as the LBs were going to Fromm's left and Nauta was going to the right and down the field (at least that appeared to be the plan). It appears that Fromm knew where he wanted to throw the ball and Nauta was heading away from the where the defenders were going. The CB that was covering Nauta was on the outside, so if Nauta keeps the ball on his inside, he's the only one who can catch it.

Again, the contact causing Nauta to fall down hosed the play entirely but I can see what was planned and it looked to be solid.

Back... and to the left.

and at this point, his hips are facing Sony, effectively removing him from the play had Nauta remained upright.
Also note the DL rushing Fromm. He split between the RG and RT, and pancaked the RG right at Fromm's feet.

I can only assume that nobody remembers the point of the discussion?

quote:The discussion as I remember it was who should start: Eason or Fromm? The discussion then delved into comparison between the two and the body of work each has accumulated so far. We got hung up on whether or not Fromm (incorrectly) locks on to targets instead of going through his progressions to find better options to throw to. This play became a focal point of that discussion since Michel was wide open and the ball hit the ground inches in front of a diving defender, almost picking it off. This play, therefore, was shown as a good example of how Fromm made a bad decision and is therefore more of a liability than Eason.

AH! I don't necessarily agree with that statement. It was an incorrect read, however, I understand y'all are saying in order to make the throw he had no time to make a read.
He's a freshman. I wouldn't expect him to make the correct read or throw all the time. I do understand the other person's feelings about people criticizing Eason for things and giving Fromm a pass. That comes from the way we have been winning. Had we lost a couple of games people would be criticizing him, too.

he does. So did Eason. The games moves so fast to freshmen that they have a hard time with it. It will come to both of them eventually PROBABLY. I think this is what most people that want Eason to have the job is thinking. Hopefully the light has come on for him and he can now do his progressions more easily.
