On the defensive side of the ball, I don't think that's possible.

With defensive, you are what your talent is.

Poor DCs fail to get their talent to perform up to what they're capable of. Good DCs get performance equal to their talent level.

But you can't scheme your way to over performing your talent level like you can on offense.

Or Mississippi State being 10th in total defense

Or Boston College being 12th in 2014, 1st in 2015 and 14th in 2016

Yeah that's absurd. You can scheme and you can also raise the talent ceiling by developing players. Both are a for, of exceeding expectations.
