Scott Field is the only field to win best field multiple times (2015 most recently) as voted by The Sports Turf Managers Association, so I think we're still doing alright

LF had AT since the 70s. Plus Birmingham HSs used it.

Drove by it. I remember a bar near there (Kevin's ?)was they only thing near there years ago. The City needs to enforce a covenant for that area.

Not sure the exact reason but they always had trouble getting grass to grow and the maintenance cost were sky high as a result.
Too hot in the summer for cool weather grass like the northern places use.
Too cold in the winter and no sunlight for warm weather grasses.
Then if you want to put paint down it's even worse. Until northern schools start ponying up for the LED grow rigs... artificial is here to stay.
OOOOR BETTER YET, hybrid. Lost of northern clubs in soccer have moved to this, as well as LED grow lights, some that get games 2x a week all year long:

I've posted this before and I'll likely post it again. One of the greatest quotes in college football came from Shug Jordan
"College football is meant to be played on campus and on grass"

It's a combo of reasons why Mizzou's had a tough time getting grass to grow. First, and this is why the air flow comes into mention, the playing surface is about 30 or 40 feet below street level. The turf down there just cooks and it has no air movement at all. Leads to a lot of issues with disease, especially with the heat & humidity in MO. Columbia also is in between with the warm season versus cool season grasses. The warm season would be great early on, but it'd go dormant by Oct 1 or so. The cool season grows very well in MO, but is much more susceptible to disease.
That's pretty much it, which is why even with a top flight Ag School, Mizzou is stuck with the field turf.

Similar issues in Fayetteville.
We had turf. Then Nutt had them go back to grass. Then Petrino wanted turf.
I've never really cared either way. Field turf always looks clean and sharp.

South Carolina rid itself of the old astro turf back in the early 1980s

football and baseball were meant to be played in real grass. none of this fake crap. if you don't have real grass, you don't deserve a football or baseball team.

We put in grass in 1995 before Nutt got here.

It has gone back and forth several times. But, the grass was so bad by late October/November. It's really a shame b/c our stadium is a diamond, straight jewell. If we had grass I'd claim it was the best. With turf I'll say we have one of the best.

I think part of the reason high schools are going to field turf is to allow more use of the field. They can have multiple games a week plus soccer and band and all that.
