Even alabama lost to louisana monroe in Saban first year.

That's all anyone remembers, but that 2007 Alabama team actually showed significant improvement.
Why is an Alabama fan even trying to debate this. Everyone who follows the sport knows that Saban was already a great football coach when he took over at Alabama. The man had been coaching for more than 30 years, won a championship, been a head coach in the NFL. Any attempt to equate Saban 2007 with Smart 2016 is completely inane and not worth addressing.
Georgia played lousy last year in large part because Kirby Smart is a rookie and doesn't know what he's doing yet. That's not intended as an insult, it's just a fact. UGA's athletic dept deserves the insults for hiring him, but we're stuck now and hoping he's a fast learner.

So many reasons beyond coaching mistakes that are well above your level of understanding?

Is Jim Chaney still doing that thing where he goes all-out air raid as soon as his team falls behind by 3 points?

I'm a devoted Alabama fan, and only a very casual UGA fan because I have lived most of my life in Georgia and most of my friends are UGA fans. If that qualifies me to respond in this thread: I hope Kirby does well, but I didn't like his hire for O.C. I said it then, and I still think that. UGA deserves better than that guy. Honestly, for that matter, UGA should never have to hire an unproven head coach. Considering that the state of Georgia produces more blue chip athletes than any state with the exception of Florida, Texas, and California, and due to the fact that UGA is far and away the flagship program of that state, then you guys should always be able to hire a proven coach. Kirby may be a great one, but he may not. First things first, fire the O.C. if you guys don't have a very productive offense this year.

I see where you're coming from, but Kirby Smart was a pretty unique case. He is the most equipped person in the college game to recruit Georgia short of Nick Saban and Urban Meyer. The upside if he pans out is massive.

No. We had no pass protection last year against good defenses. We ran the ball into 8 man fronts all day out of necessity.

Kirby had some decisions go the other way.
But the biggest issue was lack of senior leadership (the only good senior was Maurice Smith) and lack of effectiveness on the OL (we shuffled the deck several times over and never got consistency).
2017 returns a solid list of upper-class leadership and brings a strong cast of new recruits to the team.
The concernew will be if the OL improves and how many freshmen we need to make a big contribution at positions like OL and DB.
