JT Daniels (the #1 QB in the Class of 2019) was on campus earlier this week. This is what his dad had to say about the visit:

quote:

“We kind of fell in love with it,” Steve Daniels said. “It was a wonderful experience. Coach Saban hit a homerun with (Brian Daboll). There’s about a handful of people in the world that you can go to and have that kind of coaching that Coach Daboll can provide – if that. He’s just a down to earth, clear-thinking, straightforward guy. Really a lot of fun to get to know.”

Quay Walker will be in Tuscaloosa tomorrow. He wants to announce a decision in the middle of the season, but BOL says he could be commit watch this weekend if Alabama turns up the heat.

Justyn Ross says he gets along with Gus Malzahn the best out of all the head coaches recruiting him.

He also said his mother likes Alabama.

One interesting thing about Ross and Seth Williams is that Avery Johnson wants them both to play basketball at UA.

Ross says Markail Benton is recruiting him hard as well.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Thursday ended up taking us to three different cities all over the place, including a small step outside the state of Alabama.

The day started in Mobile, Ala., where we spoke with top defensive line target Andres Fox from Mobile Christian who has strong interest in Auburn, Alabama and LSU and is a top priority at all three schools. Mobile’s proximity to Pensacola allowed Alabama recruiting reporter Chris Kirschner and I to make it over to Escambia High to talk with top wide receiver target Jacob Copeland.

The final stop sent us back up to Birmingham, where we will spend Friday getting the last crop of top talent in the area. We swung by Jackson-Olin on Thursday night when we got back in town to chat with 4-star defensive tackle Coynis Miller.

Check our quick insider takes from those visits below. Make sure to come back throughout the rest of the week to see more in-depth updates from those conversations.

Programming note: Friday will be the last day on the road, which will include the rest of Birmingham’s top prospects.

4-star wide receiver Jacob Copeland, Escambia

Kirschner: Florida is recruiting Copeland the hardest out of the schools he’s considering, but it’s Alabama who’s gaining the most steam in his recruitment. He was in Tuscaloosa last week for a visit, and he’ll return to Alabama on Saturday for the Tide’s spring game. He believes that early playing time, which is the most important factor in his recruitment, is obtainable at Alabama, Auburn and Florida. Copeland originally had a top two of Florida and Auburn as of just two weeks ago. He threw that out after talking to the staffs at Alabama, Ole Miss and Tennessee, which are the schools that comprise his top 5, along with Florida and Auburn. Those staffs made it clear to him how badly they wanted him in their recruiting class even after he stated publicly that he was down to just the Gators and Tigers. He doesn’t have any official visits set just yet, but he stated how he would like to visit an unnamed California school and Michigan. He said that even if he visited those schools the all-SEC top 5 will be hard to crack. Copeland will make his commitment at the Under Armour All-America Game in January.

Wolk: Since Copeland’s most recent visit to Auburn, a few things have changed with his recruitment. His narrowed options of Auburn and Florida have added three more competitors: Alabama, Ole Miss and Tennessee. Alabama, in particular, revved up its recruiting efforts of Copeland since then. He will attend the Crimson Tide spring game on Saturday, which will be his second trip in as many weeks to Tuscaloosa. Copeland mentioned Alabama’s decision to move a few defensive backs to wide receiver, and he feels like that gives him an easier opportunity to play early, something that has Alabama much more in the mix than before. As for Auburn, Kodi Burns remains the coach he’s closest to and said Burns told him he’d be down in Pensacola next week to visit his high school. The plan remains for Copeland to decide at the Under Armour All-America Game.

4-star defensive tackle Coynis Miller, Jackson-Olin

Kirschner: It’s clear that Alabama is recruiting Miller the hardest out of the schools he’s considering. Led by offensive line coach Brent Key, the Crimson Tide have gotten across the message that he’s one of the team’s top defensive line targets. Some people may assume that because Alabama and Auburn want Miller on their respective team that he’s automatically going to choose one of those schools. That’s not really the case. Miller said he has high interest in leaving the state of Alabama because he’s been here his entire life. The schools he mentioned out-of-state that he’s interested in are Florida, Clemson and LSU, but I can’t see him going anywhere other than one of the two in-state schools.

Wolk: As a top in-state prospect, Miller has visited Alabama and Auburn more than any other schools, but that doesn’t mean the big defensive tackle is a lock to stay in the Yellowhammer State. Florida, LSU and Clemson are three out-of-state programs who have offered the Miller gives a legitimate chance of earning his commitment. Oregon and Tennessee are two others who, if they offered, would become major factors for his recruitment, especially the Ducks. Miller has stayed in the state of Alabama his whole life and said there’s a “real high chance” he leaves the state for college because he wants to explore something new. He’ll be back in Tuscaloosa this weekend for the A-Day game. There are two timeframes to watch with Miller. The first: right before the season, when Miller plans to narrow his options after he’s taken a few out-of-state visits. The second: right after his senior season, when he plans to announce his college choice. Miller hasn’t decided on all his official visits yet, but said the two in-state schools will definitely earn them.

3-star defensive end/outside linebacker Andres Fox, Mobile Christian

Kirschner: Fox is a man of very few words when it comes to his recruitment, but if you ask him about his teammates at Mobile Christian, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound prospect just lights up. I think this is a case of Fox being too humble and not wanting to talk about himself. When he did talk about his recruitment, Fox maintained that his top 3 of Alabama, Auburn and LSU remains in place. Just on the outside looking in are Georgia and Oregon. Auburn has an advantage in Fox’s recruitment because the Tigers were the first SEC team to offer him a scholarship. Once Auburn offered, other SEC schools got into the mix after that. He’s been to Auburn more than any other school and is closest with that coaching staff. Though he maintains that no school has an edge over the next, with what we learned from him and his coach, the Tigers seem like the team to beat here.

Wolk: As Kirschner pointed out, Fox is as humble as the come. When it comes to his own recruitment or play, he’s relatively timid in his responses. When talking about his Mobile Christian teammates, Fox perks up to rave about their impressive skill sets, which he hopes will help the squad make another state championship run. The two coaches who stand out to Fox most are both from Auburn — Rodney Garner and Travis Williams. Of all the schools recruiting him, LSU, Auburn and Alabama still standout, but it’s Auburn who has made its plan for Fox most clear. Fox grew up an Alabama fan, and his parents are both Alabama fans, but that will have zero impact whatsoever on his recruitment. Auburn wants Fox as its Buck defensive lineman in the class, and he feels like Kevin Steele’s clear-cut explanation for how he’ll fit at Auburn has given the Tigers a slight advantage over the others right now. It should be noted: after I left Mobile Christian, I put in a Crystal Ball prediction for Fox to Auburn.

Alabama doesn’t seem to be much of a factor with in-state athlete

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. — Alabama wants Harold Joiner in its 2018 recruiting class, but it doesn’t seem like the Crimson Tide have much of a chance to land the versatile athlete.

Joiner, a 4-star prospect from Mountain Brook High School, is set on playing running back in college. Out of the 23 schools recruiting him, 22 of them want him at that position. Alabama is the only school recruiting him as an athlete.

Alabama has talked to him about potentially playing running back, wide receiver, tight end or even linebacker. Because of the Tide’s honesty with Joiner in not knowing which position he’ll play if he did commit to Alabama, the team isn’t a factor in his recruitment.

“They were the only school out of the 23 schools that said they were offering me as an athlete,” Joiner told SEC Country. “He [coach Nick Saban] told me tight end, running back, receiver and linebacker. I’m like, what?”

LSU has told Joiner he’s its top target at running back. That has the Tigers on top. How’d he react when Saban told him that he was going to offer as an athlete?

“I mean, you can’t react to Coach Saban,” Joiner said with a laugh. “I was like, ‘All right, yes sir,’ and we moved on.”

Joiner is in a very unique situation. He wants to play running back in college, but he’s 6-foot-3 and may continue to grow a few more inches. It’s not very likely he can play running back if he gets to 6-4 or 6-5. He’d be too big of a target for defenders to tackle at that size if he’s running through the line of scrimmage. Joiner would have to move outside to wide receiver or tight end if he grows.

In the case he grows, LSU wouldn’t be an option. Auburn, Clemson and Texas A&M would be his top choices, he said, if he went the wide receiver route. Could Alabama get in the mix if it offered as a wide receiver in the scenario that Joiner continues to grow?

“They have a ton of running backs,” Joiner said. “I look at the receivers, and they don’t have as many wide receivers as running backs.”

Joiner said if Alabama offered him as a running back down the road, it wouldn’t matter because he feels like early playing time, which is the most important factor in his recruitment, at the position in Tuscaloosa is nearly impossible. The Tide have the most loaded backfield in college football.

“They have like 7 running backs,” Joiner said. “I don’t see how a guy would want to come there and just wait.”

If Joiner is finished growing, he already knows which school he’ll be committing to.

“If I stay 6-3 until like October or November, then it’s going to be LSU,” he said.

It’s clear Alabama should look in other directions.

Auburn sitting pretty for Mobile-area DE

MOBILE, Ala. — Aside from terrorizing offensive linemen, Andres Fox is a pretty mellow guy.

He doesn’t like to talk about himself much. He’d rather talk about his teammates, which is what he does when coaches or reporters ask him about Mobile Christian. When it comes to his own play and recruitment, he’d rather let the film do the talking, as it did last fall when his state championship tape led Auburn to offer, followed by virtually everyone else.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound pass rusher gets asked about himself a lot nowadays. That’s what happens when Auburn, LSU and Alabama make you a top priority.

His high school coach, Ronnie Cottrell, marvels at Fox’s maturity and composure with the process.

“When we first met with Andres when all this started, he made the statement to me that he wanted to have a team in place or at least commit before the football season. He said he wanted to worry about this team,” Cottrell said. “I thought that was one of the greatest things I’ve ever heard a kid say.”

Fox confirmed Thursday that he expects to have a decision shortly before the 2017 football season.

When it happens, all the other suitors will be out of it: “When I commit, I’ll stay dedicated to that school,” Fox said.

The underrated 3-star defensive end from Mobile has started to condense his options. With programs all over the country — Stanford, USC, Penn State, among others — coming to the small school on the Gulf Coast to recruit him, it became somewhat overwhelming, so he narrowed his top list of schools.

Fox has labeled that top group as Auburn, Alabama and LSU for more than a month now, but said Oregon, Florida and Notre Dame are programs that could be factors. My opinion here: The 3 he lists as his top group are really the only programs with a shot.

When talking about his top 3, Fox gave an unsolicited endorsement of one program in particular.

“I just really like Auburn’s defense,” Fox said. “I feel like I fit in real well. I fit into the defense really well. … Plus, they have a great engineering program. I want to study mechanical engineering.”

One factor is family. Fox admits his parents are both Alabama fans, as he was in his pre-high school days. But — and let this be very clear — none of that will play a factor in Fox’s recruitment.

Reading between the lines, Fox has become infatuated with Auburn more than any other program, which stems from a few things. First, the Tigers offered the night of the state championship game in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Second, Fox’s relationship with Auburn’s coaching staff runs deeper than with any others.

“I’m closest with T-Will [Travis Williams]. He’s just fun and cool to be around. And Rodney Garner,” Fox said.

Cottrell doubled down on his star defensive lineman’s comments.

“Auburn, since the very beginning, it’s been a team effort. I’ve heard from all those guys,” Cottrell said. “Kevin Steele has been very specific with the position and what they wanted him to play, exactly where he fit in. He’s a key guy for them because of the position he plays. But T-Williams recruits our schools, does a great job. The best relationship he has with all the coaches is Rodney Garner. They’ve got a good relationship as far as position coaches.”

Here’s some subjective commentary on my part.

After I left my visit at Mobile Christian, I put in a Crystal Ball prediction for Fox to Auburn. It really didn’t take much hesitation. Yes, Fox’s family likes Alabama, and that has likely played a small role in why he hasn’t committed to any program yet. But even though Alabama and LSU consider Fox their top guy, Auburn has been most clear about exactly how it plans to use Fox in the Buck defensive lineman spot.

He will continue to check things out throughout the spring and summer, but when the 2017 season approaches, I firmly expect Fox will commit to the Auburn class.

Out-of-state recruiting is becoming more important in today’s world of college football and we are seeing schools march into enemy territory and pull top prospects away with regularity. This week, we took a look at five of the biggest talent-producing states in recruiting and what schools have done the best job raiding them since 2012. We conclude the series with a look at Texas.

With so many schools that recruit well within the state it’s not surprising to see success levels for Texas and Texas A&M. In fact, it’s been quite a battle between the two programs since 2012 to keep prospects ranked four-stars or above at home with the Longhorns signing 56 such prospects and the Aggies close behind with 51. Baylor (14), TCU (10) and Texas Tech (eight) are well behind the duo. Here’s a breakdown of the out-of-state programs that have landed the most four-stars or higher from Texas since 2012.

3. ALABAMA

The Crimson Tide continue to bring in elite-level talent from Texas. A’Shawn Robinson was the most noteworthy addition back in 2013, but with the surprising emergence of Jalen Hurts this past season as a true freshman, the pipeline from Texas to Alabama is sure to continue. Three more four-stars signed with the Crimson Tide in February to help continue this trend, as wide receiver Tyrell Shavers and tight ends Major Tennison and Kedrick James all hope to make an impact in 2017.

Farrell’s take: Alabama can spot recruit anywhere and while it was a surprise it stole Robinson from Texas back in 2013, it’s no longer a surprise when the Tide are a finalist for Texas prospects. While success has been up and down for those heading to Alabama from the state, the lure of national titles will continue to draw players as long as Nick Saban is in charge.
